There continues the saga of Death. The deadly topic of the lyrics is still there, but the main and most important ingredient of death metal is gone - the vocals. Chuck Schuldiner, being a true thrash vocalist, doesn't betray his nature and after torturing his throat on "Scream Bloody Gore", he sounds still very brutal, but not so convincing. From modern point of view, this wouldn't be an impressive performance, although brutality in the face of Cannibal Corpse still exists. For its time this would be one of the rawest vocal performances. However, the album is fast, technical and the vocals are not quite death, so I label it thrash.

One of the most influential bands in Death Metal released this Masterpiece called simply "Leprosy", an intense and raw album wrapped in brutal powerful riffs, insane (with a little Thrash style) drums, good bass-lines, awesome cover, and the most powerful vocal style in music.

The album opener "Leprosy" starts with a great progression of riffs and drum beats, then a chilling scream settles the atmosphere for the song, a brutal intelligent song with incredible fast and complex fillings (those in the minute 1:50 are the best ones), crazy ascending solo's clean bass-lines, catchy drum beats, etc?The tempo goes from slow to catchy then to Brutal and so on, this is one of the all time favorites for all the Death Metal fans all over the world.

For whatever reason, this is my favorite Death album, in addtion to one of my favorite metal albums. Not as technical as any of the follow-ups, not as thrashy as the debut-This would probably be the "purest death metal" album by Death. Not that being more pure death metal makes it inherintly better of course.

This was the first album by Death I heard. It's not my fave, because I feel it is just a little bit inconsistent. Unlike the debut, and "Individual Thought Patterns", which are amazing the whole way through. The great songs on the album though, are huge death metal classics that are the absolute pinnacle of the band's sound. The title track, "Left To Die", "Pull The Plug" and (probably my all time fave Death song) "Open Casket" are simply immense songs, and Death at their very best.

Hehee, I remember years and years ago when I was young, reffering to those fills near the start of the song as "helicopter drums". Cos it made me think of propeller noises.

I love everything about that song, it's ultra macabre main riff, (the one that starts just before the first verse) the scorching solo with Chuck and Rick Rozz trading off, and of course, those drum fills! It's definitely one of the best death metal tunes ever written, imo.

Hehe, that's true. Even some of Death's later stuff had very macabre riffs, like the chorus riff of "Jealousy" which is just vicious. From the old Death, my fave songs are "Open Casket", and "Torn To Pieces". The latter is probably the most macabre song Chuck ever wrote, it sounds like the perfect sonic accompaniment to cannabalistic rituals! lol

from "scream bloody gore" my favs by far are "mutilation" and "scream bloody gore"! generally this band is probably the best (based on consistency and quality) death metal band and it is very very bad that it is so difficult to find more bands like them...

my thoughts exactly. TSOP isn't even death metal any more whereas this one totally is.

In my opinion the best of the first three Death albums, this has some tight guitar work but solid riffs as well.

The guitar work and riffs are stellar as always with Chuck, however the drum and bass work is very mediocre nothing to help spark the album up. To me both of these sections of the band sound functional and nothing more, its a shame really, not Chucks fault but it can't be ignored.

- What consistency are you looking for ? All 8 songs sound like 1 song ?
- If there are 3 out of 8 songs are considered classisc and also your favorite, yet still not qualified as your favorite album, guess your requirements are extremely high. May I know which album so far is your "Album of the century" ? (Unfortunately, Leprosy is my album of the century)

Emmm... no. I mean consistency in terms of song quality, not that I want all the songs to all sound the same. Scream Bloody Gore is no less one dimensional than Leprosy, but yet, I find that one to be more consistent, because every song on it is equally great. I don't have an "album of the century"... I love waaay too many albums to narrow that down to just one.
