It's rare that a band's debut record can be as strong as this, and it is even scarcer that said record can be a seminal album in a genre, but this is what Obituary achieved with Slowly We Rot, one of the best and influential death metal records since the spawning of the genre.

This is an awesome album, but the album cover is probably the silliest one I've ever seen!

The rawness of this album's sound and Tardy's incomprehensible vocals make this my favourite Obituary record so far. 'Cause of Death' is a very good album, but i find that this particular style of production suits the nature of obituary's vocals perfectly.

Pretty amazing and influential for death metal.

I am not sure how influential this particular release was.
But for me this is best Obituary, together with Cause of Death (I used to prefer Slowly, but today I like them both more or less equally much).
The title track and Intoxicated stand out.

I'm just speaking without regard to the setting in which it was released. Death was influential, but not boring. They don't always have to coincide.

I absolutely love the vocals, they are so unique and proberbly the best I've heard in death metal, the lyrics were great, and the guitar tone is seriously heavy. I like how short and simple the songs were, maybe too short at times, Words of Evil and Godly Beings for instance being under 2 minutes. I found myself repeating the title song many times when I first listened to the album I liked it alot, although some songs I found my self skipping, Skinkpuss being one.

I love this album from beginning to end.

Cause of Death and End Complete have a meatier sounding production but for me Slowly set the bar and I don't think they ever really bettered it.

Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel and Pestilence all had an important role in shaping the sound of early death metal but for me John Tardy's vocals were the first true example of the guttural roar we associate with DM today. He still sounds evil as fuck on this recording.
