What is the most depressing, sad song, either lyrically, instrumentally or likewise, in any genre?

DEAD
Draconian - Death, Come Near Me

Just read the lyrics...

We hang at the end of the rope.

Mama, I'm Comin' Home by Ozzy Osbourne.
I actually used to like it, but now after the recent death of my cousin, it reminds me too much of her and I can't listen to it without tearing up.

I have to say - like I always say, when it's a question about a sad or depressing song - Apocalyptica's Farewell. It's an instrumental song, but somehow even without any lyrics they've managed to make it sound so incredibly touching and sad.

Another sad song would be Linkin Park's Leave Out All The Rest. That song means a lot to me and even though it might seem like just an average song to most people, it's the lyrics that matter and make the difference.

Korns "Daddy" is pretty damn depressing/disturbing...

OT: There's so many of them. Song above is a fine example. Korn know how to write a depressive song. Also are talking simply slow depressing, or fast, violent in-your-face depressing? Oscillation Point from Scar Symmetry could count... Seven Sirens and a Silver Tear from Sirenia is entirely acoustic, but it will not leave you happy upon hearing it. Need I mention Katatonia? It's probably better to ask what ISN'T depressive from their discography. Deadhouse, Evidence and Ghost of the Sun spring to mind.

Mirrorthrone's So Frail is disturbingly sorrowful and pretty fast at the same time. Best you judge it yourself. As I hinted on some other topics, some gothic/doom band I'm playing lately called The Foreshadowing know how to make a depressive tune.

Silhouette of a Life - 10 years.

That song is both depressing and haunting, giving me goosebumps every time. The natural harmonics mixed with arpeggio's and with the vocals, and the slowness of it all.

And then theres the lyrics. Check it out

Melodious
Ring Of Bright Water by Val Doonican always makes me cry. I think the fact the ending of the movie with the same title always makes me cry, is part of the magic of that song for me...

When The Crowds Are Gone by Savatage is supercharged with emotion, and the lyrics are so poignant and sad. The ending of that song gets me every single time...

Wappenbund tends to stir up melancholy feelings. Mainly the songs Der Sieg Des Lichtes and Dein Sind Die Rosen. Conjures imagines of a slow march to decay.

...and that sounds really fucking emo. Oh well.

Other good ones would be Laibach's B Mashina (the Slovenian version) and Die in Winter by :wumpscut:. None of these are metal, but they do the job quite well.

Black sabbath - solitude

My name it means nothing
My fortune is less
My future is shrouded in dark wilderness
Sunshine is far away, clouds linger on
Everything I posessed - Now they are gone

Oh where can I go to and what can I do?
Nothing can please me only thoughts are of you
You just laughed when I begged you to stay
I've not stopped crying since you went away

The world is a lonely place - you're on your own
Guess I will go home - sit down and moan
Crying and thinking is all that I do
Memories I have remind me of you

Great song though

Idk about "sad" necessarily. Usually sad songs can be uplifting to me.

My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel
the end of "Perennial Quest" by Death

^ both are the ones that stuck out to me though as being sad, or meaningful

Peter Gabriel's Mercy street ... i cry like a baby every time i hear that one... its actually one line in it, when he says - in your daddys arms again .... my dad died when i was a child so it hurts like hell not being able to just curl up in his lap when everything goes down the hill ... oh now im sad again ... gonna go cry a bit, then drink and then cry some more ... hate being so darn emotional
