Since the back from the dead game, Rask had one drunken performance, but has been stellar otherwise. needs to keep it up for one more series, as whoever comes out of the west will put up more of a fight.

Do you believe that LA can win the west? I dont, maybe one more game, but not more , I am 90% that BH will take a west and ... maybe this easy win aganst Pens will be why they will win?
Its to easy for Bruins , I dont remeber any conference finals who ends in 4-0 in series

i've seen the B's cough up 3-1 and even 3-0 series leads several years back. i've watched the Red Sox become the first team in Baseball history to come back from being in a 0-3 hole, literally one inning from being swept.

I've seen the B's score two goals in the last 90 seconds of an elimination game to force overtime.

nor did I think the B's defeat of the Pens was inevitable until the clock ran out.

sure, the Blackhawks are very likely to advance... i wouldn't put money on LA winning three straight, but it's not over until it's over.

Meh. B's took game 2 and are headed back to Boston. As miserable as the close to Game 1 was, a split is still a better start than with Vancouver a couple years ago. Gotta love the 3rd and 4th lines, even with Soupy out.

Congrats to the Hawks. sucks to have lost, but proud of the way the B's played and scrapped this season... barring the last 90 seconds of it.

easier to stomach a loss to another O6 team that suffered for decades with a pathetic owner bent on withering the fanbase than it would have been the fucking Canucks.

and who knows, if two formerly moribund O6 teams have won 3 of the last 4, maybe the Leafs will finally get their due... if they can survive the division next year.

Watched PIT - VAN. Olli Määttä (pos: D) made his first goal. Congrats to him.

Yeah the season is running again...

I watched the last 10 or so minutes of that one, both of those teams are pretty fun to watch. Malkin's shootout winner was fantastic.

It was absolutely terrible watching the Red Wings on Saturday, they easily should have won that one. I would start Gus next game if I was the wings, and they won't they will start Howard and San Jose will get like 3 goals in the first period.

As long as their first line stays healthy and Helm gets back in action soon the Wings should be able to lock down a playoff spot this season, if not a good one. And from there it's game time.

I don't know what you are smoking man but the Flyers aren't making the playoffs this year. Along with the Sabres they are going to be bottom of the barrel in the east.

Fun fact as well no player on the Sabres roster has posted a positive + / - up to this point in the season. That's just wretched.

I have to admit I hadn't thought of it this way before, and I was thinking based on the travel lightening up the Wings going to the East would be good, but it means that some of the playoff rivalries of old will be gone. Especially with the Avalanche finally being a decent team (no way they keep up with the results on pace with their start though) I could see the Wings getting some action with one of the good old matchups were they still in the west. Now it would have to be in the finals, and there's no telling who gets there.

If I remember correctly he was with the wings at one point. Pretty decent player. And I will say that the Sabres got the waaaaaay better end of the Vanek-Moulson/picks deal.

Flyers had another hilariously bad game tonight, topped off with a collection of brawls including Ray Emery vs. Braden Holtby and Emery just filled him in... Gotta love goalie fights

The Red Wings haven't been looking good at all lately and they blew a nice lead in Calgary so I hope they can get their shit together and win that one.

Yep. Ever since I was 7 years old I loved them an interesting story, way back when I played rep hockey for a local team, I was maybe 12 years old, my team played the host team in the finals of a tournament and won 2-1 in double OT. I scored the tying goal in the 3rd and in sudden death went through the defensemans legs and dangle sauce on the goalie on my breakaway for the winner. After the game the ref gave me the game puck, and as fate would have it, a faded Detroit Red Wings logo was on that puck.

Looks like the flyers redeemed last nights gong show tonight at least, not that the devils are that great the wings took down the pathetic oilers with a GWG from my Darren Helm <3 glad he is finally back.

Dion Phaneuf signed for 7 at 7m per. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=440077

Terrible deal for the Leafs, even with the cap going up. If you're giving this guy 7 a year then at least make it for a shorter term. Not as bad as the Clarkson signing, but I guess that's the kind of money these guys can get on the open market. Phaneuf easily gets 7 for 7 if not more somewhere else, so I guess the scales were tipped in his favor during negotiations.

Hahahahaha! This is a super poor deal for the Leafs. Phaneuf is your classic overrated Canadian player getting paid big bucks by a Canadian team. Don Cherry presumably will say Phaneuf has been underpaid on this contract...

Ya I mean he's far from the worst defenseman out there but he's now making the same kind of money as Keith, Letang, Karlsson, Suter, Weber, Doughty, Pietrangelo, etc. and those guys are elite talent. Phaneuf - by comparison - should be earning at least 1M per year less if not 2. He's a top 2 on almost any team but would better serve as a second pairing defenseman.

My thoughts on the Phaneuf signing: Bad move, but not as outright embarrassing to the organization as the stiff to end them all, David Clarkson. Honestly, of all the so called "agitator" type players, I've never seen someone do as much childish shit as Clarkson and play so much of what can only be called terrible hockey. Without even exaggerating there are moments where it seems like he has down syndrome. No idea how he is even in the NHL.

The weirdness of it all, they have an excellent player in Mason Raymond who is making only 1 million a year! And got on the team from a tryout basis!!! Probably the best player in the league for that price. 26 points (3rd most on the Leafs) and durable too (played all 42 games) on a team with heaps of injury problems.

Now on to the winter classic. The single worst scourge on NHL hockey is what's known as "game management". I have no clue how referees can get away with admitting it exists, but that's classic NHL "can't criticize the refs in any way" policy. PERFECT example of this, the Leafs are down a goal, and Jakub Kindl gets a penalty for "closing his hand on the puck". HIS GLOVE BRUSHED THE PUCK, and not only did it not close on it, he was near the net and the REF AT THE BLUE LINE MADE THE CALL IN THE SNOW STORM!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! why did this ref call this phantom call from so far away on a play he clearly couldn't see? The Leafs were down 1-0. Straight up, they are looking to equalize it at that point. Leafs score on the power play. Great way to ruin a game and negate the hard work of skilled players, giving what was today a terrible looking Leafs team a chance to get back into the game. It goes both ways and I see it in literally every game I watch. It's like how the refs put their whistle away in the playoffs. No consistency, and it makes it hard to watch and isn't fair to the players at all.

Now, that was one loss for the Red Wings and my anger for that is more over game management in general than losing that specific game, even though game management fucked it up. The worst thing about the winter classic though was how the Leafs dealt with JM Liles. They let him go out and do a warmup skate and everything, and then trade the guy? management couldn't have waited one more day and let him play the game he had been preparing for so long? And they dangle the thought of playing in front of him letting him warm up before telling him he's been traded and has to leave? I feel really bad for the guy and I think that is a blunder on behalf of Leafs management. Really just treated the guy like an inanimate piece of merchandise.

Also reading up there a bit I may be eating my words on Philly, they are heating up and starting to get comfortable with the structure of their game at this point in the season... Tons of borderline playoff teams in the east, a scary amount actually, but they are certainly in the mix. Pittsburgh, Boston, and Tampa are honestly the only locks for me right now. Glad to see Philly playing well though, they have some talented guys and a couple players I really like.

I read some comments on TSN about that, apparently Liles was already informed of the trade but requested to skate with the team as he had been looking forward to it for a long time and wanted to participate with the team one last time. He was pretty classy during his time with the Avs so I can see him doing that. He's always been a team-first player and really buys into the whole fraternity aspect of NHL life.

Clarkson isn't that bad. I mean he's far from great but I'd take him at one or two mill in a third-line checking role, but I do agree his job as an agitator is humorous at best. He's a sub-par fighter and he takes a lot of dumb retaliatory penalties, negating a lot of potential powerplays. He doesn't drive the net hard enough for a guy who's supposed to be gritty and willing to battle either. Nonis really fucked up with that signing, although I hear those idiots in Edmonton were throwing even more money at him but he chose TO since his family still lives there.

Ah, so I guess it wasn't as bad what happened to Liles, but still, the first initial news of the trade I heard was today and I think they could have helped the guy out and let his last game with the team be a more memorable one. At least they let him skate.

And yeah I probably take it too far when I talk about Clarkson but it just baffles me how they can steal a guy like Mason Raymond (and it's not like he's some random guy either, he's a tested player who has been in the league playing well for a while) but then cough up so much for a huge contract for a dud like Clarkson. Doesn't surprise me that Edmonton would have paid more, that club has been managed straight into being the laughing stock of the league. The jersey thrown on the ice thing over there was actually pretty funny, goes to show how desperate they are to return to being fans of a relevant franchise over there.

The one big $$$ Maple Leafs deal I don't have a problem with is locking up Kessel. He definitely has almost no grime to his game at all and looks like he plays timid quite a bit, but he has great north-south speed that creates a lot of chances, a totally wicked shot and great finishing ability. Fairly one dimensional player, but the Leafs need someone to fill that role and he's the kind of guy who will actually step up, get those points consistently and do what the team needs of him.

If anyone is unconvinced about the bullshit of game management, the world junior gold medal game today proves it more. Sweden was down 2-1 against Finland for a long time, and Sweden got 5 straight power plays, at least 3 of which were absolutely phantom. And of course Sweden ties it up on the power play. If that isnt proof the refs almost always try to help the losing/hone team back into the game I don't know what is. And keep in mind I don't care at all who wins in this game.
