I've just noticed there still isn't a forum topic for this excellent, young band from the Russian Steppes. Kauan plays amazing folk-doom, and have just released their third album last year. I'll let it be known that I love this band, and would like to know what everyone else thinks about them.

I liked this band, I see it like a hybrid between Shape Of Despair, Tenhi and Agalloch, I like the atmosphere they portray in their songs, very relaxing.

I've only heard the two most recent releases and I'm already a big fan. Really fantastic music and a great overall atmosphere. I should probably check out the earlier stuff as well, as I've heard that it's heavier.

Problem?
Fantastic band! I'm most familiar with their first release Lumikuuro and I just love it and I've also heard a bit off of Tietäjän Laulu. Isn't their newest release supposedly post-rock?

Its one of those weird genres when a band isn't exactly able to fall into either genre. Its a lot of slower "doomy" music but full of pianos and violins etc. Lumikuuro and Tietajan Laula are excellent, although I haven't had a chance to hear their new one yet.

For a more comprehensive idea, you can check out my review of Lumikuuro: http://www.metalstorm.net/pub/review.php?review_id=6839

Agalloch got me into these guys. They are absolutely amazing, and quite different from what I expected. I like their album, Lumikuuro.

Only in Finnish?
Weird, I thought they did both Finnish AND Russian.

They do write songs in both Finnish and Russian. Tietäjän Laulu's has some lyrics in Russian while Lumikuuro and Aava tuulen maa on the other hand are all in Finnish.

BloodMusic

PRE-ORDER: October 23rd at 5PM Finnish time (10AM NYC).

Blood Music will be debuting the fifth album from Russian/Ukrainian underground post-rock/funeral doom masters, Kauan. The album, entitled "Pirut" (meaning - "Devils"), will see its first time printing on digipack CD and ultra-limited edition LP. The album is a single song -- a kind of funeral doom "opera" -- spanning 40-minutes, weaving its way in and out of shimmering beauty and disgusting ugliness. During the mixing of the project [in their hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia] the band and their families were under attack from the Chelyabinsk meteor strike, which delayed the album for several months. The artwork was created with that experience as the backdrop. The album will be released on December 15th, 2013.

The opening excerpt to "Pirut" can be heard here:

BloodMusic

PRE-ORDER: September 17th at 5PM Finnish time (10AM NYC).
RELEASE: November 4th.

Blood Music will be presenting the sixth album from Russian/Ukrainian underground post-rock/funeral doom masters, Kauan. The album, entitled "Muistumia" (meaning - "Reminiscences"), will see its first time printing on digipack CD and ultra-limited edition 2xLP. Additionally, we will have long-lost copies of the 2xLP first pressing of the band's most well-known album - "Aava Tuulen Maa" that were thought lost into the north of Finland.

About "Muistumia":

Through Kauan's growth and experimentation, its sound and production has vastly improved since its humble beginnings as a band of teenagers in remote Chelyabinsk, Russia. It was decided while in between labels to privately crowdfund the professional recording of a collection of re-arranged tracks from the band's early years.

The band re-recorded six of the main tracks from the albums "Lumikuuro" and "Tietäjän Laulu" in addition to the recording of a brand new song called "Unsoi."

The release was intended only for a core group of 53 individuals, but the demand for the release was too high. It is now being presented in a limited run of high-quality digipack editions with official artwork.

The closing track / re-recorded version of "Orkidea" can be heard here:

Kauan "Muistumia" 2xLP

* First-time pressing of Kauan's beautiful 6th album.
* 180-gram+ White (250 copies) or Black (150 copies) 2xLP
* Mastered specifically for vinyl from the 24-bit original mixes.
* Contains two bonus tracks - an early texture sketch, entitled "Nuotio" and the Summoning cover track "Long Lost To Where No Pathway Goes."
* 350gsm heavyweight gatefold jacket with reverse-board rough-coated printing.
* Black inner sleeves.

Kauan "Muistumia" CD

Limited edition of 1000 copies in 4-panel, rough-coated, reverse-board digipack.

Kauan "Aava Tuulen Maa" 2xLP

First-time pressing of Kauan's most well-loved album. The original label had difficulty selling copies, sold only 100 of them and stuck the others into an obscure book shop in the north of Finland. We tracked them down and are putting the rest of the copies for sale, now five years later.
