Yeah, the drum-work and guitar riffs in that album are just so solid it's redonk. And it grooves like no other....

+1 for this list. Happy to see Pungent Stench and especially Rebaelliun. I've got the album on cd-r and I like it a lot. Not a "classic" but a big 8 for sure. Of course the rest is very good to super.

I do however like a lot of Swedeath and a few quebec tech death bands.

I am the exact opposite, I think tech death is boring as all hell to listen too! It makes me want to blow my brains out. I don't care how many notes you can play in 5 seconds...it just starts to sound like a machine after a while and becomes very repetitive IMO. I like dynamics, tempo changes, and break-downs in my DM!

Most (Not all of course) tech death is concerned with guitar wankery and showing off rather than the music itself, and this kills the evil, angry and hateful atmosphere evoked by old-school death metal. Not to mention that you have to listen to a song a lot of times to get a wisp of what's happening there.
Some good tech death bands include Gorod, Obscura and (to a lesser extent) Necrophagist.

Necrophagist aren't overproduced though (not as much as modern TDM anyway), and they have a nice guitar sound (and better vocals etc. etc.)

Quo Vadis over Arsis? I never thought I'd hear (m)any people say that... I haven't liked an Arsis album in a while now but Quo Vadis literally haven't disappointed me with a single release yet.

To be honest I really like Arsis' first album and EP, haven't paid much attention to the rest of their stuff. I tried 'Defiant Imagination' a bunch of times a few years ago it never did anything for me. Neither did Neuraxis either actually, another band in that spectrum people seem to dig.

Actually I'm not sure Neuraxis do fit that bill after listening to them now.

I definitely wouldn't throw Neuraxis into the same boat as other Quebec tech-death bands... they've always been like the ugly red-headed stepchild of the group.

It's ok I guess... I dunno, for me it's too well produced; in your face guitar tone, unspectacular vocals etc. Too "normal" sounding and falling squarely in the modern tech death realm, only with more melodic leads and ting

This is much more my kind of thing: less reliance on typical tech-death tropes, strange production, guitars that aren't overly detuned, black-ish metal vocals etc:

Very true Arsis (at least with that album, and the EP) can't really be narrowly categorized as a purely tech-death band because there are melodic death and black metal elements thrown in, and the production is a lot grittier compared to... pretty much every other band in the genre. I guess I forgot who I was talking to because you don't typically fall for "the norm" or whatever and Quo Vadis are more entrenched in the typified tech-death style (despite the melody) whereas Arsis (again, specifying their back catalog) were a little more... envelope-pushing.
