So, the reason I joined this forum is because the people seem to be tolerant towards more 'alternative' types and fusions of metal genre, even though the extreme metal is probably most popular kind on this forum. Even so, some of the genres (like the top three) usually take a lot of crap/dislike from one reason or another, it doesn't really matter. So, as tolerant and open minded as we all are, we all have some artists/genres we generally don't like, or truly hate.

So, what's your black sheep of the metal family? (and please no crap about 'not metal'). I can respect and tolerate almost anything, but I guess I dislike Black metal the most (and Pornogrind, if you can call it a genre), but there's really no purpose putting poll for it in this forum. Why do I dislike it? I hardly even gave it a try, but it sounds so soulless and empty to me. That's just my subjective opinion of course.

And yours?

Very true, metal is about the music, leave the who's hotter game for the boybands.

Alas virtually every single metal band with a girl invariably becomes more about the hotness of the female band member than the music.

Except Bolt Thrower - Jo Bench will just rip your head off and shit down your throat whilst cranking out some groovy death metal bass lines. As it goddamn fucking should be!

Oh I realize this and I don't like it. That's the main reason I'm not crazy about female fronted bands. It doesn't help that many of these band in gothic or symphonic metal kind of sound too similar.

Nu metal
But there are some exceptions.
I have listened to a few deathcore and metalcore bands that aren't too bad.
But as a whole I don't like it.
And of course this is just based on what I have heard, obviously not everything in one genre sucks.
Or maybe it does, that's left to one's own interpretation.

Any genre with -core at the end. Whether that be Crunkcore, Crabcore, Post-Hardcore, Deathcore, Metalcore, Rapcore, Grindcore, Horrorcore or corecore. I've yet to hear anything from a -core genre that doesn't just piss me off immediately.

I voted for other: Grindcore............... I just don't get it: grrrr!! arrghhhh!!! aaarrffff!!!......... is that really someone trying to say something?
riffs?? isn't that just........... noise??!!
I don't know, but I guess that I'm the kind of guy that likes to listen to at least a hint of melody in a song, or a beat, a rythm, not just noise for the sake of it.
Cheers to all who like Grindcore!

But Uldreth, our resident core guru, is still about.

Well hey I don't know anyone really into -core genres, so if anyone would have good suggestions I'd check 'em out. There was a time when I didn't even like harsh vocals at all but I grew to like them, so I figure its possible the same could happen with grindcore.

Very much an acquired taste. I don't mind some grindcore but a lot of it is too difficult to listen to and indeed does come across as noise.

The other "-cores" are a mixed bag - early hardcore and crossover rock my boat but I'm not a fan of most melodic metalcore. There's so many other "-cores" out there though and I've definitely not heard of them.

Yeah I suppose I could've been more specific. I do enjoy some hardcore punk and crossover, otherwise the -core genres haven't appealed to me all that much.

Even though I'm not attracted to moder -core, I think the best heavy metal has tons of punk and hardcore built into it be it Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Motorhead, Entombed, Suicidal Tendencies, Pantera, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Venom, even early Iron Maiden.

I agree, with some theres an undeniable influence. I'm always confused when some metalheads talk about punk as if its a form of music they can't even respect in any form, when many bands they like are at least somewhat influenced by it.

I realize this is an old post but I have to agree with it, it's always kinda bugged me, especially when the band could get by without needing that sort of attention.

Add Mel Mongeon as one that doesn't prance around with her tits out to get more fans. Females in music that don't seem to rely on the fact they are females always gain some extra respect from me.

Putrefied Beauty was an all-female Italian band that had pretty good looking members. They weren't around long, but their demo/promo pictures never seemed to be going for the "look how hot we are" thing, and they were always tastefully clothed. Shame they went away as their first two demos were pretty solid too.

I'm going to have to go with deathcore. It edges nu-metal by a cunthair, but only because even the most interesting deathcore is totally fake. There's some decent stuff in Born of Osiris, but deathcore bands don't just play to a click, they're quantized to a grid to the point where there is no performance. Fuck, even alternating pieces of metalwork in the drum kit bang straight quarter notes the whole damn song.

Despise is a strong word. Frustrating might be more accurate.
When all of these genres are done well then they are fine - the problem come when you have wade through mountains of rubbish to find the gems. Power metal is just this for me - I know of no band (with only a handful of exceptions) that I like more then one or two songs on an album. Occasionally all genres have this problem for sure, but none quite like Power Metal. Between the Blind Guardians and Iced Earths is a mountain of decent (but boring) bands that sound much the same as each other (with maybe one or two songs per album)

As a huge fan of both of those band I kinda have to agree though I think Iced Earth is more a heavy metal band than a power metal band. That said, there is an album that got recently released that imo comes close to the works of Blind Guardian and Iced earth.

I've mentioned it here a few times already but Iron Mask - Diabolica is an excellent record imo. It's power metal mixed wit Neo-classical metal. Excellent record imo.

In what world is deathcore not a form of extreme metal? Some pure metalcore is also more extreme than most death metal as well, especially where it overlaps with noise rock.

No way in any sort of metalcore sound could be extreme than death metal. Also when it comes to overlapping, i don't think it creates too much fuss.

Valid point with respect to Iced Earth and generally I agree. You are quite correct that they probably fall more into the Heavy Metal camp especially these days. Perhaps Kamelot might have been better to make my point - but it nevertheless the point remains the same.

I have come across Iron Mask as well and they are a good act and Diabolica a very good album
My frustration is more directed towards the mountains of rubbish in between the gems.

Yeah, you are definitely right that there is a lot of rubbish in the Power Metal genre. Which is really unfortunate. Especially since you can clearly see that there is so much potential in the genre. Some bands are absolutely brilliant. You actually picked out another good band in the genre: Kamelot. But yeah unfortunately for every good or great album you find there are 5 mediocre ones and 20 terrible ones.

Earth Crisis and Converge are way more extreme than say Death or Morbid Angel. I'm guessing you haven't heard much pure metalcore and think it's something like Killswitch Engage, there is a reason metalcore was far more underground than death metal before then.
