At that time, Iron Maiden had already released two studio albums, Iron Maiden and Killers, which had made them known in the British metal scene. However, vocalist Paul Di Anno was fired from the group due to his uncontrolled alcoholic problems. Although this could have been proved a painful strike, Iron Maiden's golden era was about to start. Soon, vocalist Bruce Dickinson joined the group and in 1982 they released the historically important album The Number Of The Beast.

The year is 1982, and metal is still a young and developing genre of music. The new wave of British heavy metal is beginning to take its toll on the American populace. We had already had a taste of Priest's British Steel and nine entire studio albums by Black Sabbath. Now it's Maiden's turn to hit the spotlight, and let me tell you, this release did it for them.

Regularly vaunted as one of the best metal albums ever, The Number of The Beast stands tall in history. When you look at the album on closer inspection, it's a case of the classic songs being so strong they overshadow the weak points that come to the fore. Is it a bad album? Far from it, but is it one of their strongest releases? Probably not.

This is overrated for sure. I would not give it any higher than 8.5 because there are a few weaker songs: Invaders 7/10, The Prisoner 7.4/10, Gangland 6.6/10 and Children of the Damned is a little bit weak in terms of the instruments. For an album to surpass 9 the WHOLE album needs to be strong, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is an example of that.

I agree except The Prisoner is classic in my eyes

Yes, actually now that I listened to that song again I think I was probably being too harsh. Its a great song, nothing spectacular though.

Too overrated. The only tracks I liked are Total Eclipse, Children Of The Damned and 22 Acacia Avenue. (Hallowed Be Thy Name and Gangland completely boring).

Why "The Prisoner" isn't on the touring setlists is something I can't fathom, as I find it one of the strongest tracks.

I actually just saw them play that song live over the summer for the Maiden England Tour. It was awesome.

This album is fucking classic. I honestly don't know what would have happened to metal music had this album not been released. Every song is killer (no pun intended).

The album is good but not great. I never understood the classic status people have put on it. Both Killers and the self-titled debut are stronger albums all round.

Three great songs do not a classic album make

I have a similar opinion. I think musically it's pretty good, but something about Bruce's voice has always bothered me. He always seems to be slightly off-key, and it always finds a way to nag at me in the back of my mind, no matter how much I like the music. I guess I've just always preferred Di'Anno's voice to Dickinson's.

If it wasn't for Hallowed Be Thy Name, this would be quite an average album. I always thought that Run to the hills and The number of the beast are weak songs. Actually, I never could understand the hype about many Iron Maiden songs.

I am and I agree to a certain extent with the guy you quoted. Especially the part where he says it's quite an average album. Average I wouldn't call it, just normal good, but not the great work of art it is made out to be.

Lets just say that I prefer Black Sabbath to Iron Maiden. Apart from few albums, NWOBHM is not my thing.

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is my favourite Iron Maiden album, but this is a close second. "Invaders" is a great album opener and the fact that all of Maiden's 80's albums with Dickinson have better openers speaks volumes about their quality, not "Invaders'" lack of it. "Gangland" is the weakest song on here (and should have been relegated to B-side status instead of the superior "Total Eclipse"), but Burr keeps it rolling along nicely. Sure, the title track and "Run to the Hills" are overplayed, but they're both Maiden classics. The rest of the songs are all excellent. "22 Acacia Avenue" is a personal favourite, containing several parts, riffs and solos, all building to a stunning climax.

Oh, and "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is on this album as well. Quite a popular tune that.

Like all of Maiden's 80's albums with Bruce, I dont find this album overrated at all. The opening track "Invaders" is actually one of the most underrated songs in Maiden's whole catalogue, and gets the album off to a great start! "Total Eclipse" should have been on the album when it was originally released, so it was nice to see it be added to the album proper on the re-release. xD

IMO only one song here is overated, ok also Run to teh hills, I like still it but others are much much more..... in those days this album wasnt overated att all, nowdays well hard to say, its more IM like band.
Still good album, maybe best lyrivs in NWOBHM history , Invaders, 22 Arcacia Avenue, and HALLOWED By Thy name is best song from album... you can heer diference, Bruce and Pau, its damn powerful killer album. 1th album abd you can see Bruca and IM together has future , rest is history

Picking up an original CD pressing of this album and revisiting it again has reminded me how much I love this so much. I thought Brave New World was my favorite before, but I think this will take the number one spot when it comes to favorite Maiden albums. Absolutely classic in every sense of the word.

And albums with one horrible song, a few bad songs, and a few okay songs--like No Prayer for the Dying--are rated 10. It's actually kinda hilarious when you think about it.
