I never really thought of my favourite band name. I guess Behold! the monolith would definitely be one of the better ones, it fits their music perfectly. Mastodon as well, their first couple of albums atleast.

Metallica, Slayer and Testament - catchy, easy to say and fun to scream at the concerts.
Tool - have something... deep We are all tools or smth... mueh
Mastodon - while listening to "Blood and Thunder" it gives me shivers down the spine. Lyrics combined with the name and rage that is occupied in music make this shit sooooo strong.
Motley Crue - perfectly defines band.
Black Sabbath - soooo dark.
Anathema - good looking.
Cinderella - joke

A lot of bands use iron, steel or dragon in their name (especially power metal). Is there a band called Steel Dragon or Iron Dragon?

I don't know about Steel Dragon.

Think they were drunk when they named their band. Russian BM I think. Don't bother checking them out. They're awful. Just the name is nice haha.

Metallica really is pretty much the perfect metal band name. Very memorable and just sounds plain cool. I'm of the belief that at least a small part of Metallica's popularity is because of their name. After all, if you're going to get into metal, why not start with a band that has metal in their name?

The band very nearly went with Chickens in the Pantry. Think they made the right decision.

Bats in the Belfry would be nice as well.
I'm sure most people will vehemently disagree with me, but I think Metallica is a great metal band name. Of course, those who'll disagree, will do so because they hate the band, not because the name is sucky...
Generally I think the best names are the ones that stand out as original or surprising:
Wolves in the Throne Room
Ruins of Beverast
Spiral Architect
Subterranean Masquerade
The Postman Syndrome
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Rebels Without Applause

I've always hated the name Meshuggah. Sounds way to much like the word "meshugganah", the yiddish word for "crazy"
