hi.i want to say this is not a discussion about punkers, but more about the music.i personally think that if you need a break from metal, punk is a good choice.it doesn't have the agression, but since that is what metal is about,it won't be a problem.also i enjoy the optimistic vocals, and the sheer fun-sounding atmosphere of 80-90s punk.i don't enjoy that much the old-school punk.
other than that i think punk loses its originality and novelty value fast,if those values haven't already been lost.also i tend to get bored of punk, although i haven't listened to that much amount of this music type.
so,this is what i like and dislike about punk.what do YOU think?

Sometimes I feel dirty for listening to some punk bands like Discharge or Minor Threat. I mean ideologically I'm on an entirely different planet. Can't really get on with the whole "lets change the world with this 12 inch mowhawk, that'll show 'em!" business. That's why I like Amebix alot, they aren't as "in your face" with their politics and rather just paint a really dystopian view of the world with no intent to fix it.

that is the one thing with punk, i have to pretty much completely discard the ideology. i like the ethos (DIY, non-rockstardom, etc), but the politics are nowhere near my own.

Musically, I never had much of an ear for punk. I will admit however that I've probably not heard enough (whether old or new) to make an informed decision so as far as what I think about it goes - it's a gray area.

I don't really care much for the music, but one thing I do know for sure is that punk rock has undeniably influenced metal in a lot of ways. So I do have loads of respect for the genre.

Generally know shit-all about punk so some recommendations of modern day punk bands that are reminiscent of stuff like Dead Kennedies, X-Ray Spex, Cirlce Jerks, Fugazi, Bad Brains etc. would be most appreciated, preferably stuff that isn't too polished.

To boil punk, as I understand it, down to a mathematical formula: Speed + fuck you = punk. Problem is, that formula works with a whole lot of extreme metal too.

I used to listen to a lot of punk back in the day, although dont really listen to any of it anymore except for maybe Bad Religion.

My first exposure to punk was probably through my uncle, who was a huge fan of 'The Jam' & 'The Buzzcocks'. I grew up listening to his records & him teaching me how to playing their songs on guitar

When i left the UK & moved to Dubai around 15 years ago, i took up motocross & got involved with that culture (watch any early freestyle motocross video's from the 90's & you will see nearly every song on the soundtrack is punk). I guess the main bands i listened to at this time were Greenday, Bad Religion, Snuff, Strung Out, NOFX, Lagwagon, Frenzal Rhomb, Anti-Flag, Bloodhound Gang, Cock Sparrer, Guttermouth, King Prawn, Millencolin, Pennywise & Rancid.

As others have said, i didn't agree with the political ideology of alot of the punk bands, but they were very influential in developing my musical tastes to what they are today, & IMO the link between punk & metal is pretty undeniable.

Punk is my second favourite genre, though I never had the time and the patience to listen to more punk bands (and when I started asking people about good punk bands, I ended up listening to shitty bands like MCR, Fall Out Boy and other disabled kids) so I can't say I'm very knowledgeable about it. Anyways, I appreciate the fact that they're more optimistic and relaxed than most of the metal bands out there.

I like good punk, like Aus-rotten and like the real stuff. Also like Ska quite a lot.

I HATE the "punk" like Good Charlotte, Green Day, etc (the faggy shit).

Hell yeah, bands like that give punk a bad name.

Yep. Especially because they are the ones that get all the attention. But hey, you've gotta dig deeper than MTV if you want good music anyways.

Sure, punk is pretty high on my "good music genre"-list. I have quite good collection of Finnish hardcore-punk...Rytmihäiriö, Dun-Delion, Riistetyt, Vox Flatus and many more artists... from foreign bands i enjoy mostly US bands: Black Flag, Minutemen, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Fugazi, Rich Kids on LSD and NoMeansNo.

I think I like my punk little bit twisted, and little bit progressive. I adore Jello Biafra's voice

I Love Punk!

Very generally, Extreme metal deals with the ills of religion while street punk & crust punk deal with the ills of society/politics. I like music that is about something.
Punk is so empowering!
I have some pretty hard left-wing ideals, so punk suits me. It's just there aren't as many good bands like how there are in metal.

I find non-political punk to be a bit pointless though.

Alot of punk deals with anarchy which is an extreme right potitical ideology, so i dont see how it would suit you. I dont know what you think exactly but most left-wingers love huge federal goverment and all that liberal equality shit which is pretty much socialism and communism. The right consists conservitaves, libertarians (which is almost anarchism) and straight up anarchism.

Temporary off topic, although i guess it still remains partially on-topic.

uh anarchism as far right? really?

no.

neither is libertarianism.

the political spectrum is not just a line going off to right and left, it's more like a ring/circle. the further to either extreme, the closer the two become. cases in point - Stalin and Hitler. Stalin was extreme totalitarian communist left. Hitler was extreme far-right. Both ran their countries in almost the exact same manner. See also Chavez, and the Kim's of North Korea.

libertarianism shares some tenets with conservatism and right-politics, specifically in regards the market place. one foot on the right... and one foot on the left. libertarianism pushes for personal liberties, which in most social issues pushes them to the left. (legalizing drugs, for example).

the notion that anarchism is far right is perhaps the single most (unintentionally) hilarious thing i've read on this site all year... considering K7 copping to want to fuck pumpkins, that says a lot.

because we all know the political spectrum from center to right goes: McCain -> Romney -> Newt -> Palin -> Rush -> Jello Biafra. amirite?

(see how i turned it back on topic by bringing up a punk anarchist to end my post? weee.)
