The wait is finally over. Finland's premier band Moonsorrow released their latest album in early 2011. And like a ton of bricks hitting you in the gut, the sharply-named Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa is most likely going to take your breath away. In line with its precursors, this album features epic compositions of pure Viking Folk Metal. Where the album differs is mostly in the mood. This time around the atmosphere is darker, more insidiously poignant, and overall heavier - as in more oppressive - than it has ever been. The gloomier tone of the album doesn't strip away much of the trademark Moonsorrow spirit though. In doing so, it remains true to the core while still offering something previously uncharted by the band; namely a nice little trip to the blackened death territories.

This album is dense. Really dense. So dense, in fact, you could cut the sound waves with a knife. Or a Viking axe, whatever you'd prefer.

No US release date, what a crock of shit

Most of it is on youtube already.

whats your point? tracks being on youtube have no bearing as to why there has not been a US release date.

Everything he doesn't like is metalcore. Britney Spears, Elton John, Michael Moore, and green beans are also metalcore, in case you guys didn't know.

My point is that, if you want to listen to it, you can find it on youtube.

Am I the only one not finding this even "very good"? Don't get me wrong, I don't hate this band at all, because I still have very positive memories of "Tulimyrsky"...

This album is really not that good when compared to past albums.Huuto and Kuolleiden Maa are very good songs but the others are just mediocre.Moonsorrow have proven that they can do better than this.

Totally agree with both. Huuto is among one of the best songs from Moonsorrow.

No you're not. imo the album is good, nothing more, nothing less. Although I have to say the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic world is well created, the album is becomes a bit tedious after a couple of listens.
----
I really want to here some intelligent melodic technical brutal shredding relieved by some serene atmospheric unsettling moments

Definitely. This is in no way a landmark release that's going to stand the test of time, but what it is, though, is an excellent album out-and-out, and that cannot be disputed. Personally, this is my second-most favourite Moonsorrow album, after the majestic Kivenkantaja...

Yes surprisingly good and a bit different from their usual work (or so I feel). It seems a bit more simple so to say and the extra instruymentations seem to actually add to the songs rather than embelish them. The songs in their simplicity too also convey a bit more emotion than usual, with both the vocal and singing department. Lastly this is one fucking epic album.

I gave it a fair and square 9. Moonsorrow are one of few bands who stay true to their origins yet always adapt their sound, and therefore I haven't been able to say I'm disappointed in any of their release so far. I especially enjoy Muinaiset, can't really say why, that song just sticks with me. And I'm glad this albums has more than 2 songs, as much as I loved the previous album, it's easier to concentrate on songs that are less than 15 minutes long. And also, seeing them on Wednesday for the first time, can't wait.

The word gen means "illusion" or "apparition." In India, a man who uses conjury is called a genjutsushi ["a master of illusion technique"]. Everything in this world is but a marionette show. Thus we use the word gen.

What I hate with this band is that they can't seem to write normal-length songs... They play long tracks with some highlight moments within, so that on the whole, you can't rate the songs as average, even though 50% of them have been boring to death. For example, Tähdetön takes more than 5 minutes before staring to be interesting. In the end, I rate the album 8-9 but in fact long parts are very uninteresting.
