The year is 1986. Judas Priest are at the top of the metal world, having recently released the highly acclaimed Screaming For Vengeance and Defenders Of The Faith, their record sales are through the roof, and their concerts are sold out. There are also a couple of stains, though; they are involved in a civil action that alleged that their recording of the song "Better By You, Better Than Me" contained a subliminal message, which led to the suicide attempts of two young men. In addition to this, Rob Halford is fighting substance abuse and is going through emotional turmoil. Musically, glam is starting to get very popular, especially in the USA. Under these circumstances, Judas Priest release Turbo.

It´s not their best album, and it´s softer and so on.. But I think it´s cool =)
At least they could get back to "form" after this with albums who were more like classic Priest.
Like other band for example metallica who never get back to form after black album..

Ha, a guilty pleasure of mine. I am not a Priest fan at all but I like the guitar-synth oriented music on this album.

As radio-friendly as popmetal can be.

Catchy songs but a long way from metal and the glory days of an album like Stained Class. Too much guitar synthesizer and cheesy lyrics.

Yeah, had another listen and most of the lyrics on Turbo are downright embarrassing. Not sure what they were thinking - probably just interested in commercial success. I think the lyrical content on earlier releases was much better.

On their earliest releases the lyrics were oay to good but quite uqickly they went down the slippery slope, not just on Turbo they are horrenndous, also on Ram It Down and quite a few other albums, although there it is not every single song that has horrible lyrics.

This is probably one of the very small amount of albums that could legitimately be called "glam metal". The glam and poppish bent of the album is impossible to ignore, but there's also a metallic edge to some of the songs which is certainly abscent in most other glam acts such as Poison, Bon Jovi, et al.

This is most prominent in many of the solos, and some of the riffs. Such as the intro riff in "Rock You All Around The World", a song which also contains a very metallic solo section. Overall, yes, this album is weak, and not a patch on their classics. However, songs like "Out In The Cold" (which is musically great, even though the lyrics are a bit cheesy!), "Rock You All Around The World", and "Hot For Love" are actually very good songs, and certainly more than a cut above what most other glam associated acts were producing at the time, lyrics aside. There are some utterly horrendous tracks on "Turbo" though, such as "Parental Guidance", "Private Property", and the totally ridiculous "Wild Nights, Hot & Crazy Days". But overall, even a bad Priest album isn't terrible, and whilst this definitely was a low point in Priest's career, they still produced some good stuff even here.

I beg to differ. This one is terrible as is Nostradamus and some of their live stuff.

Whilst I disagree, I can quite easily see why some Priest fans would find "Turbo" a terrible album. "Nostradamus" isn't terrible, but it is a very patchy, and overlong album.

Nostradamus is a terrible album due to its pretentiousness, being overlong extremely patchy sonsg and downright crap interludes and fillers and it boring as hell done to death subject matter.

If you ask me to mention an album that exemplifies pretentiousness, the first one to come to my mind is "Nostradamus".
Overlong, over-pretentious and, in the end, an epic failure.

Agree with two points you make here - this is the worst Priest album but even then, the album has merit.

Personally, I think it is difficult to overstate the significance that Judas Priest has had in the metal genre. And with a career that has gone on so long, there are bound to be highs and lows. Amazingly, after a few weak albums, they came back with something as incredible as Painkiller. Shows their true greatness.

Yep, it's very similar to "Point Of Entry" in that regard, which was also a weak Priest album that still had merit and some good songs. POE is a bit stronger than "Turbo" though...

I can't think of a single band who has been going for 20 years or more (and which has released several albums) where every album they've made is of a very high and similar quality. Especially a band who experimented with their sound so much over the years as Priest did. One thing Priest have never been is predictable, and that is definitely commendable in a genre like metal. Whilst I don't think "Painkiller" is Priest's best album, it was certainly a landmark album for them. Just when people thought they were a spent force, they unleashed that metal monster to the world!

Turbo is their worst, closely followed by Nostradamus, both albums with Owens on vocals are masterpieces compared to both Turbo and Nostradamus

Both of the Ripper albums are very underrated, imo. Especially "Jugulator". And I would say that both albums are better than "Turbo" and "Nostradamus".
