Opeth are about as mainstream as Metallica these days.
Surely not as popular as Metallica. But, mainstream and accessible? Surely. I think everyone I know in real life who likes Opeth is not a metalhead.
Perhaps I get a false impression. I never cared at all for Opeth, as everything I heard from this band was extremely boring.

C'mon, new details already! Steven Wilson mentioned a few days ago that he's finished mixing the 'incredible new Opeth album'. Which means, it's only a matter of time before we get tracklistings and artwork and what not.

Well, I just checked out Opeth for the first time this morning, and was unimpressed. Th alb um is good news for the thousands of fans on Metalstorm, but I'll pass.

If they would go back and focus more on atmosphere like they used to as opposed to technicality, maybe I would get excited about it.
This. Although, based off your vote for Damnation, it looks like you hated it. I thought that album was super atmosphere-focused... which is why *I* love it.
Oh and this probably wouldn't be a popular idea, but I'd be pretty happy if Opeth released an album full of songs like Burden. It would be pretty sexy-fresh if you ask me.

Part of what attracts (or attracted) me about Opeth was the variation. Damnation had absolutely none. It was a bit of a borefest.

I can understand that. It does seem like one big song (which is why I think it arguably stays soothing). It seems they had one idea... and then just rolled with that one idea the whole album.

Well, yeah. Whenever I hear Burden, I think *smooth*. And well... sexy-fresh is just another way I like to describe such feelings the song provokes. XD

Weird... I really like Damnation but Burden is such a MEH song it's unbelievable, the keyboard solo is chessy as hell too.

Eh, to each his own, I suppose. The keyboard solo is my favorite part of the song. Very blues-rock inspired. I found it fantastic and very fitting. The whole song packs a big *sincere*-sounding emotional punch, I think. Something a good amount of the rest of the album lacks.
But, uh... I think we are digressing. This thread is about their new album, no?

Of course of course... II'm going to rewrite my previous post so it can be on-topic:

I like "Burden" a lot, so I'm with Fat on this one. Kinda like I like "Road Salt One" and a lot of people don't.

Yes, we're definitely posers.
As for the Opeth album, Wilson said it was excellent, I'll believe him for now.

Steven Wilson? Guy is such an Opeth fanboy. He would say that about anything they put out.
