The general consensus when a great band dares to move away from their original Death Metal sound is usually not positive. However Opeth have done it before masterfully with Damnation in 2003. They are back at it with one of the year's most anticipated albums, Heritage.

Cutting to the chase: Compared to their previous releases, Heritage lacks character. Despite the song structures being very progressive rock and the vocals being crazy good, the absence of catchy guitar riffs or memorable growls is a downer. One can positively recognize Opeth as the artist, especially since a lot of the songs borrow tidbits straight from the Ghost Reveries period. Certainly they manage to perpetuate a dark atmosphere throughout the album, but the mellowness of the whole thing is borderline irritating to someone expecting their trademark sound. I know we have been forewarned by Mikael Åkerfeldt himself about this being a throwback kind of release. Still, I believe this would be either catchier or more aggressive. Nevertheless the album does feature good moments, mostly from the jazz-infused portions of the songs.

Heritage poses more questions than answers. Have Opeth reached a creative cul-de-sac? Have they chucked their "Extreme Progressive Death Metal" for good? Have they finally shed their "Underground Garage Band" (I am quoting Akerfeldt from an earlier interview) and have ventured out into the Pantheon of the "mainstream" Gods from their hallowed underground temple so frequented by hordes of reverent worshipers?

That cover art sparked my interest for Opeth again, I might check this out.

Yeah, it screams obscure 70's prog to me.

I think they are gonna copy Pain of Salvation's Road Salt One. Just saying

I was thinking something a little bit less mellow, but personally... I would not mind another Damnation.

Couple of facts about this album:

- 56 minutes
- no growls
- strong 70s vibe, even the production nods to that direction a bit

Hmmmm... I'm just going to pretend this is not Opeth, just some project by Åkerlfeldt that happens to have the Opeth tag on it.
I'll keep my expectations extremely low since I don't feel like being dissapointed again.

As long as they keep the wanking at minimun and for the love of god please take some sessions musicians with you, it's so cheap to use the keyboard instead of having someone doing the strings for real...

Just don't get it, why he is insisting in making the band sound simpler and simpler, while the thing that keeps them unique is their complex songwriting and diversity , i am afraid of what Opeth might become .

I dont see why people are groaning at the fact that this album wont have any death growls on, personally i think
that opeth (along with mikael akerfeldt himself) have wanted to outstretch their influences and break the boundaries even further:) This album could still be as good(or indeed better) than their other releases! just have to wait and see.
Until then, let us anticipate the forthcoming UK tour! it hasn't been announced yet,but there sure as hell will be one:)

Hmmm I love growls but I also enjoy his clean vocals so it will be interesting to see where I stand on this one. As long as there is those "intense parts" I should be satisfied.

Well, now i am very suspicius about the album, 10 songs and 56 minuts?, too many songs very few minuts.

I love Opeth ability to impress me with their technical skills (By The Pain I See In Others, The Twilight Is My Robe, The Moor), their mood changings through the same song (The Moor (again), Bleak, Master's Apprentices, Hessian Peel) and the lenght of their songs (which is an atributte that often contributes with the others two) (Deliverance, Black Rose Inmortal, Wreath).

But now i found the longest track on this album is "Famine" 8:32, they already have me thinking with the lenght, and really hope does not happen the same neither with the technical skills nor with the mood changings.

I love Opeth and i always have had high expectations of them they have never let me down so far.

I can't wait, although it will be very interesting (not being negative) to see how the absence of death growls really affects aggressive aspects of the album. God, I really want to hear this album. Mikael is one of the most talented metal musicians
