The general consensus when a great band dares to move away from their original Death Metal sound is usually not positive. However Opeth have done it before masterfully with Damnation in 2003. They are back at it with one of the year's most anticipated albums, Heritage.

Cutting to the chase: Compared to their previous releases, Heritage lacks character. Despite the song structures being very progressive rock and the vocals being crazy good, the absence of catchy guitar riffs or memorable growls is a downer. One can positively recognize Opeth as the artist, especially since a lot of the songs borrow tidbits straight from the Ghost Reveries period. Certainly they manage to perpetuate a dark atmosphere throughout the album, but the mellowness of the whole thing is borderline irritating to someone expecting their trademark sound. I know we have been forewarned by Mikael Åkerfeldt himself about this being a throwback kind of release. Still, I believe this would be either catchier or more aggressive. Nevertheless the album does feature good moments, mostly from the jazz-infused portions of the songs.

Heritage poses more questions than answers. Have Opeth reached a creative cul-de-sac? Have they chucked their "Extreme Progressive Death Metal" for good? Have they finally shed their "Underground Garage Band" (I am quoting Akerfeldt from an earlier interview) and have ventured out into the Pantheon of the "mainstream" Gods from their hallowed underground temple so frequented by hordes of reverent worshipers?

A really good album! I was actually worried that I wouldn't enjoy it that much because of the lack of death metal vocals and real heaviness. However, Heritage is a damn good album!

I'm enjoying the album at the moment. I don't get the comparisons with Damnation. I think it is an entirely different album altogether.

Really digging "Haxprocess" and "Famine".

I take that comparison back, Damnation was better.

I wasn't talking in terms of quality. I just think the albums are very different in terms of how they sound. If you like Damnation more or think it is better that is a different matter

I just wouldn't compare them based how similar they sound, because they don't, to me.

They are similar in concepts.

Why?

I'm not a fan of Opeth and generally Progressive music, and somehow I didn't like this album much.
It needs a few more spins but it lacked a lot of things that I need to find an album good.

As Åkerfeldt said "I think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record."
Since I get this Album I listen to it constantly, and more I listen, more I enjoy.

When my friends ask me about the album, I said to them "you might not like it once".

Just gave it a listen. It has a very progressive feel to it which I personally find great. This album is an awesome addition to the Opeth discography!

Both are "different" proggy all-clean vocals albums that Akerfeldt "has always wanted to do."

Wow.... This is such a GEM! An absolute masterpiece... This is not for closed minded people who don't actually appreciated what music really is. Opeth never was just about growls... This album has a VERY high level of musicianship. You can really see how Akerfeldt is a genius for pulling out that kind of stuff after writing death metal for years! This is an awesome album!

And here comes the first Opeth fanboy to tell me that he is more open minded than me because I don't think Heritage is a masterpiece. Only he can see the greatness of it!

"you obviously don't like Opeth"

i am a fan of the band and have five of their albums, i just don't drool over them (or anyone else) like you seem to. whether or not i like a band has zero bearing as to whether or not i think someone's voting patterns are absurd.

My voting pattern has nothing absurd.... I really think Still Life and Blackwater Park should be definite 10s, at least for me, they are perfect.... Anyways...

So you're saying that if I like a certain band's entire catalog means my opinion is less worthy? Having bought every Opeth studio album post 1999, and since I think Still Life and Damnation are worthy of a 10 rating my opinion must be discarded as well, right? You're entitled to your opinion, but that does not mean other people's posts are worthless just because they don't agree with your point of view.

This is getting off topic. In my worthless opinion then, after a few listens I think this is definitely a 9. It's a more complex albeit less aggressive piece which I much appreciate, and with every listen I still uncover more and more layers I didn't hear in a previous listen.

... The first listens were actually puzzling, but now it's gaining ground. Sure, it may be not their best work and sometimes it seems a bit sparse, but it's pretty interesting and diverse, and it shows a 100% prog Opeth. Anyway, it's better than the "Watershit" failure. It's a solid 8, for the moment.

I feel it won't be appreciated by many, especially metalheads and those who are not familiar with prog. Fine... Guess everyone has his own tastes. Just give it time and let it grow on you...
