I have listened to very little Doom, and would like to know more about it. Can you recommend me which are the best and "basic" Doom metal albums? Like Reign In Blood and Bonded By Blood are for thrash or Altars Of Madness and Legion are for death metal. Preferably with clean vocals. I listened to Candlemass' Nightfall and Draconian's Arcane Rain Fell and love those albums. As well as Sabbath's old stuff (if that counts as Doom)

Here are my recommendations: Paradise Lost --> Shades of God, Draconian Times, Gothic, Icon. Katatonia --> Dance of December Souls, Brave Murder Day. Anathema --> The Silent Enigma, Eternity, Alternative 4, Judgement. Type O Negavite --> Bloody Kisses, October Rust. Saturnus --> Veronika decides to die. Cult of Luna --> Salvation Cathedral --> The carnival bizarre I don't know if this album can be considered doom, in this page is tagged as "Melodic Death" but let's promote the discussion Amorphis --> Tales From the thousand lakes. I could tell you about more bands like My Dying bride, for example, but I haven't listened much to them so I can't tell you any album. I hope you enjoy it.

I think you should also try the early Cathedral albums, such as "Forest of Equilibrium" or "The Ethereal Mirror". Also be sure to listen to My Dying Bride's "The Angel and the Dark River" and "Like Gods of the Sun". I would reccommend their other albums but these ones are with only clean vocals and are really good. When it comes to the classic doom I can reccommend trying out Saint Vitus and Pentagram. That's the first that comes to mind...

Trouble - Psalm 9 Pagan Altar - Volume 1 Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus, Born Too Late Witchfinder General - Death Penalty Also Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, if you haven't already checked it out. Also, Written by immortal83 on 25.01.2011 at 10:23I can see how you might think this would qualify, but it would have to be doom-death at the very least due to the vocals. Music-wise however, the simple, catchy riffs and relatively basic drumming could well qualify this as a 'classic doom' sounding album. IMHO

For non-extreme doom (although Marcel is better with this, as he is way more familiar with traditional doom...) Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus Estatic Fear - Somnium Obmutum Katatonia - Brave Murder Day My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River The Obsessed - The Obsessed Pentagram - Be Forewarned Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow Trouble - Trouble Warning - Watching From a Distance While Heaven Wept - Sorrow of the Angels I'm not a fan of all those albums myself and I'm a big doom listener (mostly extreme), but a lot of those albums embody "accessible" and/or "basic" doom. Hope that helps!

Master of Puppets is a classic thrash album, A Blaze in the Northern Sky is a classic black metal album, Clandestine is a classic death metal album, Somewhere Far Beyond is a power metal classic, etc.

Try also Cathedral - Soul Sacrifice (EP), which is one of the essential works of doom metal from 90's, then also Solitude Aeturnus should do, especially their debut album.

25.01.2011 - 16:20 Written by immortal83 on 25.01.2011 at 10:23 This, specially the bold one, that's my all-time favorite Doom album. Yeah, MDB are (or were) awesome, specially "Angel And The Dark River". But, from the OP, I'm guessing you want classic Doom, and I just can't help there. Might want to check out Warning's "Watching From A Distance", this site's biggest Doomster calls it the best metal album ever. I didn't like it at first, but it's growing on me, fast.

People I've introduced into doom metal tend to like Swallow the Sun and Daylight Dies. If you like Draconian, you'll probably like early Tristania. Even though those bands both have rough vocals, they still enjoyed them a lot. Definitely Katatonia too. I'm sure you'll like the song "Last Alone" by Daylight Dies. We all have our preferences of course, but try not to be closed off from dabbling in rough vocals. It truly opens new doorways and it's one more musical element you can appreciate. My Dying Bride is the first doom band I listened to and I still listen to them today more than any doom band. If you want classic doom, early MDB is definitely that. I do enjoy MDB's entire collection from As The Flower Withers to For Lies I Sire though. Swallow the Sun Daylight Dies Novembre Katatonia

Swallow the Sun - All of their albums, but start with "The Morning Never Came" Anathema - Alternative 4 and Judgement Katatonia - for harsh vocals, Brave Murder Day. For clean vocals, Night is the New Day (it's not really doom, but incredible nonetheless) Draconian - Arcane Rane Fell October Tide - Rain Without End and Grey Dawn My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River Candlemass - Nightfall Black Sabbath - Master of Reality Those are some of my top picks. There are many other great albums out there too though

Rather than overwhelm you with a giant list, I'll recommend five albums that really got me into traditional doom. Reverend Bizarre - In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus Pentagram - Pentagram The Obsessed - The Church Within Get your feet wet with these and if you like what you hear then start in on Marcel's intimidating (yet very high quality) list.

Depends on what kind of doom you want, I'm just going to highlight some of my favorites: with clean vocals: Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass, The Wandering Midget, old Black Sabbath, Grand Magus, Eternal Elysium, Anathema, Pagan Altar, While Heaven Wept, DoomSword, Krux, Novembre, Wheel, Fenriz' Red Planet, ... with other type of vocals: Katatonia, Mournful Congregation, Ahab, My Dying Bride, Swallow The Sun, Mar De Grises, Sons Of Otis, Empyrium, Black Sun Aeon, How Like A Winter, Mourning Beloveth, Galadriel, Draconian, Rapture, In Ruins, ... I certainly forget a lot, but that's all I can think of right now

Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is about as classic and "mandatory" as it gets, although I slightly prefer their follow-up, Nightfall. go there next.

Nothing to add... On the contrary I would like to know better some bands mentioned here by Marcel On March 26th Saturnus will play near my home with The Foreshadowing, Jack Frost, Midryasi, Black Oath and Tethra. It's nice to know that you mentioned three of this bands as classics, now I'm incredibly more interested to go to this festival! I admit I only know Saturnus and The Foreshadowing now, and this will be a very good chance to improve my Doom knowledge

In my humble opinion, here are some that can't be missed. Black Sabbath: First four albums (Black Sabbath-Volume 4) Candlemass: First four albums (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus-Tales of Creation) Electric Wizard: Come My Fanatics & Dopethrone Pentagram: Day of Reckoning, although Relentless is really good too. Saint Vitus: Born Too Late Sleep; Sleep's Holy Mountain. Check out Jerusalem and Dopesmoker too if ya want, but be warned: they're both composed of one hour+ song. Kyuss: Blues For the Red Sun Trouble: Psalm 9, The Skull Acid King: Zoroaster Enjoy and doom on, my friend

My opinions of the albums I've listened so far that were recommended: Trouble - Psalm 9: Awesome, really like this type of doom. Great guitar riffs. My Dying Bride - The Angel And The Dark River: It's ok I guess. I didn't found it special or anything, but I'll give it a few more listenings. Warning - Watching From A Distance: Wow, this is great. Really depressing, powerfull stuff. Katataonia: I had listened to some of their recent stuff and didn't like it. But this is pretty good. Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metalicus: Great, probably my favourite Doom band so far. Electric Wizard: I already knew this band, but I thought they were suppoused to be Stoner. Anyway, I like their first album, but really dislike Dopethrone which apparently it's suppoused to be their best. Thanks everyone for the recommendations!

Early Candlemass (Epicus Doomicus Metallicus and Nightfall) is a must, I guess. As for a "modern classic", check out Reverend Bizarre's I and II albums. "II - Crush the insects" is the album that introduced ME to doom, it's accessible and still a very traditional doom record. Bands like My Dying Bride, on the other side, sound very different to me, and you will perhaps prefer one of these kinds of doom over the other.
