I have listened to very little Doom, and would like to know more about it. Can you recommend me which are the best and "basic" Doom metal albums? Like Reign In Blood and Bonded By Blood are for thrash or Altars Of Madness and Legion are for death metal. Preferably with clean vocals.
I listened to Candlemass' Nightfall and Draconian's Arcane Rain Fell and love those albums. As well as Sabbath's old stuff (if that counts as Doom)

I m into this for ten years ....

So?

I am into doom since 1983 (that is discounting Black Sabbath of course) and into My Dying Bride 1991. And I dare say I find (yes, it's all subjective) 34.788%... Complete is their worst after A Line Of Deathless Kings and For Lies I Sire and I only find Swallow The Sun's fist one nice. Although totally unoriginal, but at least it is played well and has some memorable hooks.

Fyi Marcel's list aren't all the doom bands he knows of (he's not B.E. ffs)... those are just the ones that have crashed at his apartment while on tour.

I certainly hope not.

Yeah, the problem with Doom threads here is that once Marcel posts, there really isn't much left for the rest of us to say.

I kinda read the OP as meaing that the poster wants to know which are the albums that are considered the definitive, most representative example of the genre. Pretty much all of the ones that I would include have already been mentioned:
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Volume 4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage (I consider the Dio-era stuff to be more Heavy Metal than Doom, but that is of course open to debate).
Pentagram - Relentless
Witchfinder General - Death Penalty (again, Doom or Heavy Metal - open to interpretation)
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Trouble - Psalm 9
Cathedral - Carnival Bizarre
Reverend Bizarre - Harbinger Of Metal
Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley
Disembowelment - Transcendence Into The Peripheral
Esoteric - Subconscious Dissolution Into The Continuum
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
My Dying Bride - The Light At The End Of The World
Witchcraft - Witchcraft

This is not as long as Marcel's list, nor is it necessarily my list of favorites, but rather a list of the ones that over the years I have seen to have garnered attention from fans and critics as being important milestones in the Doom genre.

I still think he should just compile a proper doom "List" (in the site sense of it...) and when anyone asks, we can just link it.

What I could do is compile a list of the doom releases I physically own (but when I have multiple versions just list the regular one) and state what sort of doom it is and put a personal rating next to it.
And update the list every month when I receive new doom releases.

Sorry but Swallow The Sun are totally NOT a hard band to get into. It's the easiest doom around and really really really light. Old My dying Bride is infinitely harder than the poster boys of doom.

Yeah, swallow the sun got me (a clean vocal purist) into the world of grunting and growling because it was easy and accessible lol.

Hi there! I'm a huge doom metal fan. A list of recommendations is hard to make, because there are a lot of albums you should listened to.
You should separate doom metal in genres. For example, there's classic doom (Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Candlemass), doom death (My Dying Bride, Anathema, Paradise Lost), funeral doom (Disembowelment, Thergothon, Esoteric), stoner doom (Cathedral, Sleep, Place of Skulls), sludge doom (Electric Wizard, High on Fire, Grand Magus, Kylesa), and experimental doom (Sunn0))), Neurosis, Cult of Luna, Katatonia). I think this way is easier. Here's a hint on which albums you should pick up first:

Classic doom:
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Candlemass - Nightfall
Trouble - Psalm 9
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Solitude Aeternus - Into the Depths of Sorrow
Reverend Bizarre - In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend

Doom death:
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Anathema - Eternity
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
Morgion - Solinari
Mourning Beloveth - A Disease for the Ages
Novembers Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure
Swallow the Sun - The Morning Never Came
Draconian - Arcane Rain Fell
(also check Tristania's "Widow's Weeds", it's a gothic metal album, but it's worth checking 'cause it's slow paced and heavy)

Funeral doom:
Winter - Into Darkness
Disembowelment - Transcend into The Peripheral
Thergothon - Streams from the Heavens
Esoteric - Epistemological Despondency
Evoken - Antithesis of Light
Unholy - Gracefallen
Dolorian - When All The Laughter Has Gone
Skepticism - Stormcrowfleet
Tyranny - Tides of Awakening
Ahab - The Call of the Wretched Sea

Stoner doom
Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
Sleep - Dopesmoker
Place of Skulls - The Black is Never Far
Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun

Sludge doom and experimental doom stuff:
Burning Witch - Crippled Lucifer
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Eyehategod - Southern Discomfort
High on Fire - Death is this Communion
Grand Magus - Iron Will
Kylesa - Static Tensions
Sunn0))) - Black One
Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood
Cult of Luna - Salvation
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
Khanate - Things Viral
Halo - Body of Light
Isis - Oceanic

Hope it helps!!!

This topic surely will help

I'm a noobie with doom and the site as well. About a year ago a friend recommended Swallow The Sun, I bought the two latest albums and liked it a lot. After listening to them, I've started to dig the genre a bit more and will probably find plenty of good music with these recommendations everyone has written here.

I'd like to see what Marcel has to say about that.

I just shook my head in total bewilderment when reading the post above yours.

Maybe he's speaking from an Australian perspective but what he says is totally wrong when speaking from a European perspective.
For instance Candlemass debut was highly regarded upon release and CVandlemass played Dynamo Open Air in 1988 in fornt of about 20,000 people. And evven though Candlemass were on a small label the distribution was very good. The first three albums could be bought all over the place.
Cathedral's debut was called doom and they were called doom in the printed metal mags we had over here. And My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and such were refered to as doom death here when they released their debuts.
Black Sabbath, Pentagram were Always considered proto doom en Trouble and Saint Vitus doom back in the Eighties.

I definitely think that's the case here - I didn't realize he lives in a completely different part of the world but that definitely makes sense.

Well I think Europe is kind of the Mecca of metal so growing up as new bands were forming would be a lot different for someone living in Europe compared to someone growing up in Australia, especially in times before the internet.
