Not sure if there's a topic of this sort around but if you have any Death/Thrash recommendations post them here. I've never really been very interested in Death metal until recently. I've been listening to, and enjoying the likes of Atheist, Master and Opprobrium (only their older albums so far). I don't know a great deal about the genre but I guess what I'm looking for is any suggestions of old classics etc.

Cannibal Corpse are together with Deicide the most overrated dm bands ever imo.

I would probably agree. However, I'm not sure we should consider both bands as old school DM. Imo, they lean more towards Brutal Death.

Cryptopsy (None So Vile and the other earlier albums)
Suffocation
Dying Fetus
Defeated Sanity
Devourment
Disgorge

These are my suggestions if you wish to know what Brutal Death Metal is. If you listen to CC or Deicide after listening to any of the above, you would probably say that they are nothing but normal Old School Death Metal bands.

I find Deicide circa Legion to be much more brutal than any of the Suffocation albums I've listened to (the first three).

I just scrolled through quickly and might have missed it, but no mention of Cadaver? I just heard In Pains for the first time recently, and it is really fucking cool. Reminds me a little of Death or Athiest, although the sound is maybe a little grittier than both.

I checked out all of the death/ thrash bands that I was unfamiliar with, with the exception of those on Balthazine's post (will get to that). Of the ones I heard for the first time, Poison, Incubus/ Opprobrium, Merciless, and Infernal Majesty sounded the best. Of those bands, which albums should I target first or stay away from.

Of these bands, I like Demolition Hammer the best of course, although I am already familar with them. Of the bands I have not heard of, Mortuary might just be my favorite, although metal-archives has about 15 bands of this name. Assuming it is the one which released Blackened Images, they are pretty fucking good and raw death/ thrash.
No Return and Demiricous are also pretty impressive. But I saw some poor reviews for Demiricous because it is apparently plagiarizing material. I've only heard a few songs from them so far, and although I wouldn't call them original, plagiarizing seems like a strong word. Is there any truth to this?

Kind of an unnoticed album really. It's a bit tech-y but not in a wanky way and they don't fuck around. It's quite good and you can find it around the interwebs for less than $5 pretty easily.

Off their new album. Reminds me somewhat of the band Nails, in that they fuse death with a kind of hardcore tinge. Very nice and bassy with lots of thundering drum sound.
