Over the past 12 months I have been listening to quite a few German Black bands, many of whom I hadn't heard of before and I must say that I have been quite impressed both with the quality and diversity of sound in the German Black scene. Bands such as Coldworld, Agrypnie, The Ruins Of Beverast, Lantlôs, Todtgelichter, Imperium Dekadenz all have quality releases to their name.
I personally think that if you like Black metal, then you should be able to find a band that appeals to you. Whether you prefer the melodic leanings of Dark Fortress or the avantgarde(and brilliant) Todtgelichter or if you prefer your Black to be a bit proggy then Nocte Obducta may be worth a listen.

In this topic you can discuss the known, big bands or bring new, interesting acts to light

I don't know any of those bands, I'd have to look em up.

All those are great examples (apart from Lantlôs who I think are pretty overrated) of the German black metal scene (especially The Ruins of Beverast).

Verdunkeln are a must for disinctive atmospheric black metal. Their one album is immense and apparently their demo is also great, I've never heard that though.

Two awesome songs:

Aaskereia ('Mit Raben und Wölfen', if you can get passed the super shrieky vocals, has some amazing pagan songs and melodies) Dark Tribe (though not so much their last album, the rest are pure unadulterated chaos and insanity, try them at your own risk) and the mighty Nagelfar (from where The Ruins of Beverast was born), maybe some Luror, Endstille and Absurd from time to time, are a small number of other favourites I still listen to from a genre of music where my interest has dwindled in recent months. A lot of people drool over Katharsis, Secrets of the Moon and Lunar Aurora too but they've never really grabbed me. I've always had great reverence from the German black metal scene though.

The Ruins Of Beverast and Nagelfar are among the finest (imo) that German Black metal & Black metal in general have to offer. Alexander von Meilenwald is a genius.

Farsot is a good Krallice-type (re: "hipster") black metal band.
Dark Fortress have a strong pseudo-meloblack discography as well.
Not a fan of most Agathodaimon releases, but that's probably the "biggest" name from the scene (not really extreme by any means).

Nyktalgia is one of my favorite depressive black metal bands.

Germany actually has a really good depressive/atmospheric scene:
Wigrid, Wedard, Anti, Lunar Aurora, early Bethlehem, ColdWorld, Darkestrah, Blutklinge, Vinterriket, etc.

I don't think I listen to a single German Black Metal band. I simply can't find any that appeals to my tastes.

Farsot aren't bad, I like their music but the vocals aren't the best. I think they have a new album due out soon. I haven't heard Nyktalgia so I'll give them a listen.

Nyktalgia are very good. Another rare example of a DSBM band that I actually like. And Anti are ok while we're on it.

Completely forgot about Darkestrah. They have some amazing stuff. 'Epos' in particular.

I didn't mean to imply they're bad - in fact I quite like IIII. What I meant by that hipster statement was that some people don't consider their "progressive nature" to be tr00; of course, that doesn't equate to poor quality.

Darkestrah is not from Germany, they simply moved there

It's the same as with Tvangeste and Melechesh - they started out somewhere else, but where they play now is where I consider them to be part of that scene.

I listned to Agathodaimon, it's agreat idea, prog and BM, but the clean vocals are wicked bad. I'd be a fan if not for that. USually I can ignore some slightly bad vocals.

I'll second Lunar Aurora: not a single bad release.

Geist (nowadays called Eis) is also very good, especially their debut. Didn't hear the 2011 releases yet though.

For me, Kathaarsis has some okay stuff, which is odd since I really don't like Transilvanian Hunger. I guess they got a little more of an Under a Funeral Moon vibe going on though.

Not for me. There are alot of good bands from there especially Blut Aus Nord, Nocturnal Depression, Peste Noire, Aldaaron, Ameseours and others.

I agree that the French scene is one of the most overrated, and I've understood why Peste Noire gets so much hype... I personally think they are as mundane as you can get, not one redeeming quality. I myself think Eastern Europe has some quite good BM out there.
