Recently I have become quite interested in Swedish Black Metal. I just ordered a tape by Matricide, rumoured to be pretty good so I'd like to hear people's opinions on that as well as some other bands I am interested in. Namely, Heresi, Kyla, Hypothermia, Life Neglected etc etc
NOTE: I do NOT want this to become a continual discussion about Marduk. Lets stick to the more exciting, underground side of things.
Honestly I don't think of innovation when I think of Swedish black metal. Solid and consistent but nothing to warrant reaching for a box of Kleenex.
True... although I feel there are some exceptions like Funeral Mist, their debut got a really sinister and special vibe imo. Same with the doomy debut by Ondskapt... Thety didn't continue with that doomy vibe though

You can't really deny though that Funeral Mist have been going on the reputation of Salvation for quite a while now. The last album, whatever it was called, didn't exactly inspire people. As for Ondskapt I remember thinking they had a great sound but sitting here now I don't remember what the heck they sound like. I do recall a bunch of people saying their last album was under par though.

I'm one of the few who enjoys FL's last album. Haven't heard Ondkapt's latest so can't argue.

I recall liking the one album that the Swedish Leviathan did way back when, that aside I think one release each from Mörk Gryning, Svartsyn and Ofermod are the only other things from this region I particularly enjoy.
Ondskapt, Watain, Funeral Mist - these three leap to mind immediately. I especially enjoy Funeral Mist's "Salvation". There's some really wicked music there, with exceptionally well-done vocals. On second thought, I don't remember anything really greeat except these three bands.
Oh, I didn't forget bands like Marduk or Setherial, it's just they are crap
EDIT: In before I get asked about Shining - I always think about tham as a doom band, that's why I never mention them as good Sweidsh black. Even though they're as much black as they're doom of course

I might sound like a fanboy if there was something I couldn't say enough times in my review was how incredible Arioch's voice was. One of my favorite vocalist in BM tbh.

Ah yes, I remember your review now. And yes, the vocals are incredible!

Doom? Atmosphere and mood-wise yeah, but as musical style itself is concerned, it's pretty much non-debatable that they are black...
@Joe
How many Leviathans are there? I've heard of 3 so far.

Like Slayer666 said musically they are black, totally not doom there. Only in atmosphere it is, at times.

Just listening to a random CD I bought the other day by a band called Styggelse, apparently Swedish by the lyrics... Certainly nothing new, but kinda catchy nonetheless.
