Often there are some bands which do not exactly fall into DEATH or BLACK metal category. So we call them Blackened death metal. It can be associated with death metal grunts or grownling with black metal playing styles or riffing to some extent and blast beats. Bands like Angel Corpse, Zyklon, Vital Remains, Mitochondrion, Crionics, Melechesh, Necrophobic, Belphegor, Behemoth coming to my mind right now which can be classified under this genre. Feel free to discuss all about Blackened death, bands associated with it, its evolvement through history and where its heading in near future! Thank You.

Yeah, Portal is one of those bands that I want to see live but their evil presence would probably summon Cthulhu and kill the crowd!

Akercocke, Dragged Into Sunlight and Oath To Vanquish are a few other good ones that spring to mind. I prefer death metal when it adopts black metal characteristics, a good way of halting the sterile feel of a lot of death metal bands.

History of Black/Death Metal Part I : Mar 1984 - A four-track 12" EP, Apocalyptic Raids, was released in March 1984. At the time, it was regarded as one of the heaviest and most extreme records produced. By then, the band had already broken up, but the recording was one of the original black/death metal recordings. (More parts to follow soon)

Part II : 1987 - The trend of music changed from new wave to heavy metal and rock music. Viking metal, thrash metal, death metal, black metal, power metal, and doom metal emerged as subgenres of heavy metal. In Europe power metal resulted from the harshness of death and black metal and a new wave of British heavy metal broke into the music scene. Part III : 1989 - Bands like Necrophobic started to contrast most death metal bands that were starting to take root then by taking their influences from black metal pioneers, coming out with death metal with special touch.

You'll probably like Kerasphorus, relatively new band that disbanded last year unfortunately: Spearhead is a great band by the way, sounds like a blackened Bolt Thrower to be honest.

That Cauldron Black Ram track is very cool. Sounded like a bit like a Mithras song before the vocals kicked in.

Spazmosity with Ola Lindgren on vocals. Their debut Welcome Death from 2010 is ok, maybe more black then death. I wanted the album last year but I couldn't order it in my fav store and later I forgot to search for it. I don't think it's easy to find. EDIT: I'm not sure Ola is on the 2010 album.

I think a lot of Nile material also fits well in here. Especially the early releases Black Seeds Of Vengeance and In Their Darkened Shrines. Also the track "4th Arra Of Dagon" from their latest album, Those Whom The Gods Detest, is a good example of how to make death metal interesting and less "sterile" as !J.O.O.E.! wrote (very well put in my opinion). Although it adopts some very doomy elements it serves the same purpose as the black metal spice - to create an atmosphere so thick you can sink into it. \m/

Nile =/= blackened death, simply put. What kind of black metal elements are in their music?
