I really found a recent liking for death metal. And as you reckon, I instantly knew that I had to hear Cannibal Corpse. My friend already told me about them, and he said they were the best band in the world. I was really anticipated, but when I checked them out, I thought they were EXTREMELY overrated. I couldn't stand any song except Hammer Smashed Face, which I can play on guitar. Too generic for me. The irony here is that I really like old school death metal. I was writing this when I was listening to Corpsegrinder's former band, Monstrosity, and REALLY enjoying it. So could you tell me what to do about this? Maybe I'll be able to get CC someday.

Difficult to tell man.
It's a love or hate band.
After reading your post I don't think you gonna like Chris Barnes' era (at least to start with)
Maybe you should try some later work like The Wretched Spawn (2004) or Kill (2006) and then go back for Bloodthirst etc..

My opinion: delete CC from your computer

yet if you still want to get into them, I'd say listen to the first albums of the Corpsegrinder era, might be what you'd like the best I guess. or perhaps their very first album with Chris Barnes

Don't get into them, it's not worth it. It's a generic, boring and completely run-of-the-mill excuse for a death metal band.
Apart from being quite an early death band, they have nothing exciting or original about their music.

I actually like Cannibal Corpse and view them as a good band but overall they ARE overrated. Listening to it as a generic death metal band might be better, as it is not that bad. "Hammer Smashed Face", "Gutted" and "I Cum Blood" happen to be my favorites outta their songs (all Chris Barnes - I find no diff. between him and Corpsegrinder), but yeah, they don't provide much creativity overall to their songs.

I think they might be overrated because back in their time they did provide something really new and interesting. And their lyrical content is really disgusting and gorey - which brings one of the several reasons of their popularity / infamy.

Exactly... I dont get why people hold them in such high regard when CC's Sound is very generic... I understand they where probably one of the most brutal bands going back in the day and they're album art was controversial but a shit load of bands had bettered them before and after, I understand its all opinions but the're are way better DM bands out their.

Yes. Monstrosity's first two records are way better than anything CC has released IMO.

In fact, I think Monstrosity's first record and In Dark Purity are the complete opposite of CC. Underrated.

I think that Chris Barnes' era was really better than actual era. They're good but there are a lot of more bands more original than CC like Death or Morbid Angel (my favourite death metal band), CC are a bit repetitive and overrated like band, but Paul Mazurkiebicz and Alex Webster are great musicians.

As some said, Barne's era is worth it. About later stuff, I'd pick Bloodthirst and Kill. Yes, it's predictable and repetitive, but sometimes it's pretty enjoyable.

Yes, you've done well to check out Monstrosity first, as they're a damn good band. I love Death Metal but even when I was a teenager (a long time ago!) CC were just more of a gimmicky band, because of the extreme songtitles and stuff, rather than having lasting value.

On that note, I think some of their less OTT songtitles are more 'shocking' - i.e. 'Stripped, Raped and Strangled' is quite unpleasant and realistic, whereas 'Entrails Ripped From a Virgin's, er, lady part' is just ridiculous..!

Cannibal Corpse is the AC/DC of Death Metal. That's a good thing, it's better to stick to what you know sometimes than it is to experiment and fuck it up badly (*cough* morbid angel *cough*).

Most of their albums have at least 4 masterful songs, followed by mostly filler. IMHO the most ''complete'' album they have is The Wretched Spawn, so I would suggest you listen to that one...

Also, their live shows are among the best in the business, so maybe you should catch them next time they play close to your home. Say whatever you want about their innovation or creativity, but at least they've stuck to their guns for 2 decades and never let their fans down (*cough* morbid angel *cough*), and there's no way you can deny their talent, especially in the case of Alex Webster.

Definitely give Bloodthirst a shot. Really the only Corpse album I put on with any frequency.

And yeah, listen to Captain Obvious, go to one of their shows asap.

I went to Mayhem Festival a few years ago with a few friends who were into death metal, I wasn't. At the time I thought headbanging and making the horns were stupid acts. Anyway I saw Cannibal Corpse \ Behemoth back to back without knowing any of their songs and I became an instant convert of devil horns and headbanging following a few failures in mosh pits that sucked me in. Got knocked off my ass by a friend I came with and the guy from CC said 'We do this for fun so if someone gets knocked down, help them the fuck back up' (Paraphrased).

Anyway, even for a non death-metaller, Cannibal Corpse shows were very fun to be involved with, even if you don't know shit about their songs or song titles. However the one song I did recognize was 'Fucked With A Knife' because that's when the crowd went crazy.

I do enjoy CC once in awhile, but their shit is so repetitive it gets stale fast. I actually think Kill is their best album, but pick one album and you will hear all that CC is about. You'll either love or hate them, I guess.

I agree with you, Gallery of Suicide has a pair of excellents songs like Sentenced to burn, Gallery of suicide and I will kill you. Vile album has Devoured by vermin and Perverse suffering, and the Tomb of the mutilated album Hammer Smashed Face
and I Cum Blood. The rest of the songs are good, but not excellent. The Kill album is enjoyable to listen, but it's very plain in my opinion.

Anyway, I would love to see them in a show, I think that should be a fuckin' madness :O

There are a bunch of different albums to try if you are getting into Cannibal Corpse. Eaten Back to Life has the most old-school sound, while Butchered at Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated are probably their heaviest. The Bleeding is their most musical, and Vile is just my personal favorite of theirs. After that album is hit and miss, and I really only like Bloodthirst of their post-Vile albums. But, I have heard a lot of people who aren't really Cannibal Corpse fans enjoy Kill, so check that one out if you haven't. With that said, Monstrosity's Millenium is a fucking classic and is as good as Cannibal Corpse at their best.

The case often that it's either love or hate. But I don't think that HAS to be the truth. The fact is that you actually can get into a band you did not like before in certain ways. It's only then, when you've tried to get into the band on the hard way that it proves if you're forever going to hate it or if it is for you. I had the same issue with Immortal. I love norwegian black metal like darkthrone, burzum and mayhem, tsjuder and stuff like that. BUT, I could just not get into Immortal for some reason... Probably one of the reasons may have been because I pictured the band as some sort of joke or a very non-serious band. I couldn't find the same dark athmosphere as with the rest of the norwegian bands. Then, I started to listen trhough some songs from Immortals whole discography, starting with the oldest ones. When I did that, I found out which albums I liked the most and the more I listened to the songs from the albums I liked the most, the more I could appreciate their other songs which I did not like quite as much as the others. That at least worked for me with Immortal.

Good Luck!!

I have fucking-kill-everything-and-everyone days and CC is great for those days. Like Daniell (in the second post) wrote, is a hate or love band. Since some music can't get to extreme to me, on some days, I like Cannibal Corpse. If you don't like them, then you don't like them. Death is also a great band to listen to btw.

Actually, I'm listening to TOTM and I'm starting to enjoy it. It's not the best death metal album I heard, but it is..Somehow good.

Here's my advice: don't get into Cannibal Corpse. There're a thousand bands out there who deserve your attention and your money more than those guys do.
