Mastodon - Album Cover Artwork Unveiled

Atlanta progressive metallers Mastodon will release their new upcoming album, The Hunter, this October through Reprise Records. You can find the album cover artwork below.

The artwork was created by AJ Fosik, a wood carver who is also responsible for the backdrop the band uses live. This marks the first time Mastodon has not used acclaimed artist Paul Romano, who was responsible for all of the group's previous artwork.

Mastodon recently revealed more song titles for The Hunter. Tracks to appear on the band's follow-up to 2009's Crack The Skye include: "The Hunter: All The Heavy Lifting", "Dry Bone Valley", "Blasteroids", "The Octopus Has No Friends", "Stargasm", and "Curl Of The Burl".

The Hunter was recorded at Doppler Studios in the band's hometown of Atlanta as well as in Los Angeles with producer Mike Elizondo. As with all of their albums, Mastodon decided to take a completely different tack and musical approach to the music on this album. The band feels confident that fans will be excited and fulfilled by what they will hear.

Adultswim.com still has an unreleased Mastodon song, called "Deathbound", available as free download.

Oh, geez.... wtf.

Well, I guess it is not THAT bad. It actually reminds me to King Crimson's "In the court of the crimson king" with those lost eyes and the funny face.

But I seriously LOVED all the previous album covers from Mastodon albums, with the golden-shiny colors and everything. That guy Paul Romano understood everything.

First impressions: In my opinion, this is far too silly a cover for Mastodon after Crack the Skye. Judging by the ridiculous song titles (Stargasm, Blasteroids, etc.), it looks like they are trying to match the cover and song content. I'm actually more intrigued about this album than before, and I'm not a really big Mastodon fan. The last time I saw such silly song titles and a terrible album cover? Morbid Angel. Here's hoping Mastodon can prove me wrong and show me they aren't suffering from a midlife crisis (because it certainly looks like a mess right now).

I loved the crack the skye cover art... even bought the shirt.

as for this one, i dig it. the stylistic shift might be a signifier that they completed their elemental albums and were making a shift in thematic approach.

as for the wood carving art, i know brent hinds took up wood carving during the recording of Crack The Skye, so this might be one of his outside influences...

It's interesting. Moreso if the thing was actually sculpted out of wood before gracing the album's cover and is not just another piece of CGI.

Do love the lettering change.

I really liked Crack the Skye, both the music and its artwork. I was horrified by the artwork they used recently during the live shows. This album cover confirms to me that this album will be very different indeed. At first listen "Deathbound" is not the Mastodon I would like to hear, but they have never disappointed me so far, I am just going to be patient and reserve judgment until the 10th listen of the new album...
