You might say that if you've heard Road Salt One, you already know all you need to know. After all, the title Road Salt Two kind of gives it away that it is a linked album that we have on our hands. You might say so... but I won't. Because it will be unjust regardless of whether you like the first part or don't. It's not to imply this album is all that different, or that it will blow your mind. No, but it is a fine piece of music, with nuances to be discovered on repeated listens.

Pretty sure all you cats need to put away Opeth's latest attempt at recapturing the spirit of classic progressive rock and give Pain of Salvation's latest a spin or two. Expect plenty of bluesy grooves, catchy harmonized melodies, and a vocal performance by Daniel Gildenlöw that will tear out your heart strings with no remorse.

After 20 listens, probably the best Pain Of Salvation album so far. Not as catchy as the previous ones at first listenings, but it grows in you faster than cancer!

Seriously, if you liked Road Salt One, you'll love this one.

Well...at this point I'm having trouble coming up with words to describe the beauty of this album to my ears. This is the album of the year, so far. Much darker than Road Salt One, and just all-around a better album. And this is coming from a huge fan of Road Salt One. This is just fucking beautiful.

Just heard it. This is with no doubt much better than RS1.

Too bad it has that dirty production too, I get it was on purpose but It bothers me sometimes. But the songs themselves are really great, lots memorable moments and surprises.

For now it is a 9, but I'll give a few more spins before giving the final score.

Well, final score would be 8.5 or so... so a 9 it is

It's sounding really awesome already, it has many elements reminiscent (is that right?) of the past like the album Be in the song Healing Now. I have to give it more listens but it sounds really interesting from what I'm hearing.

User is neintanke, Septic Flesh fanboy. Check the profile and then "View all ratings".

He voted "1" all the albums that have surpassed "The Great Mass" this year (i.e New records of Moonsorrow, POS, Havok, Fleshgod Apocalypse...)

I think we can anulate those votes if we tell the Staff, but honestly I don't care that much.

I gave it one listen so far and I wasn't very impressed. But then again the same has happened to pretty much all Pain of Salvation albums. I am going to wait for my actual copy to arrive to see if it grows on me, but so far I don't know if I really like it.

Listened to this a few times. First impression is that PoS once again prove that tons of character and lots of heart can carry an album a long way. ^-^ We'll see how this one holds up over repeated listens.

While I still prefer their "old" style, this is truly "excellent". My first impression is that it's darker and more diverse than RS1. I think my favourites are "To The Shoreline" which easily could have been on an earlier PoS album and "Eleven" with its cool Black Sabbath riff that later turns into a Liquid Tension Experiment like jam.

yeah, that album was solid, but it doesn't warrant the negative voting of albums that they've probably not even listened to. it defeats the purpose. if "The Great Mass" attains the top spot at the end of the year, it'll be a tainted win. honestly, that album is good, but may not even make my top 10.

Anyway, I'm enjoying what I hear on this album. Pain of Salvation have always been wildly creative and daring, which is a characteristic I respect about them. so far its a solid 8 from me.

Having dropped any connections to metal, Pain Salvation have unintentionally dropped something else - originality. When they played progressive metal, they stood out. With metal gone, they're one of many prog rock bands, with only Daniel Gildenlow being a brilliant exception (but he always was brilliant anyway).

I was about to thrash this album before listening to it since I really didn't like RS1... but this is just so fucking good, The Physics of Gridlock is one of their best song, can't describe how beautiful this album is.

While I can agree a little bit with what you're saying... I don't think that it's that big of a deal that they're lacking in orginality and their new sound does not bother me. This album sounds more like Pain of Salvation than Road Salt One by a long shot. I think they've really hit a sweet spot with balancing trademark PoS qualities with the more straight-forward blues rock/R&B/prog rock sound they have been going for.

I've listened to this album a thousand times now it seems. I find it VERY moving. I don't think an album needs be original to be perfect, and it's my favorite album of theirs since the Perfect Element Pt. 1. ^~^

Oh, and I think it's really obvious that Daniel has a strong passion for classic music derived from African American culture.

I'm happy to say that I have changed my mind about this album. It's much better than it seemed after a few initial listens. It's not great, but very very good. I guess quality will always make itself apparent, regardless of genres. At least that is the case with Pain of Salvation.

This is definitely a great album. I'm not sure which one I like more, this one or the first part, both are showcasing the band's ability to make a complex and varied music without being too pompous or making an epic-scale tracks.
Besides the obvious (but not obnoxious) similarities with the first part here and there, at times this album reminded me of "Scarsick" too. Probably some of Daniel's vocal lines are "at fault". Well, in my case it's a welcome reminiscence as I liked that album too.
