Space Metal!

***Currently working through suggestions and adding some spacey non-metal things when they cross my mind***
As a lover of all things sci-fi I find metal to be the most accommodating of genres when it comes to themes of space/aliens. This is a list of those albums which use this theme and/or evoke an overall 'spacey' atmosphere and which I find particularly intriguing and enjoyable. No order for now and a work in progress (recommendations most welcome) Last Updated: 9th April 2014

Indeed - looking forward to that

Likewise. Can't wait to see all the prog rock that's likely gonna be on there.

I still think The Human Equation is one of the best representations of Ayreon's sound, so it seems suited for this list.

I wonder whether you'd recommend I add the latest Ayreon btw, is that one spacey enough?

Seeing that Syk already commented here, I am surprised he hasn't mentioned Sirius, the Portuguese symphonic black band.

Pretty standard and cheesy, but well done, and fits the theme.

^ Good one jefe! Still need to listen to the rest, but I like it already. Happy to remind you about Sirius, they never got enough recognition for those two albums.

I read that the list maker is taking suggestions outside of metal. So here goes, an album that doesn't have a space theme, but totally gives that floaty zeroG kind of feeling. I'm going to post this everywhere on MS apparently.

Edit: That's just a song. The album title is Bricolage.

Yeah symphonic BM is a sub-area of black that I never really listened to but Sirius managed to draw me in. Could be because of bias toward the space theme and that the ship looked a little Dune-like (kinda).

Having seen Dune again less than a month ago I get what you mean. Symphonic black gets tiring very fast. Never got past the big names either.

To be honest, I think I either don't get the meaning of "spacey" very well, or I listen to a lot of stuff that could be tagged as such. I feel like adding a ton of Electronic/Trip-Hop/Witch House videos, but I don't think the OP will like that.

Perhaps some users reading the list wouldn't mind though.. Especially if it's witchhouse or electronic

Sirius, the Portuguese symphonic black band.

sorry, pun.

I'm not averse to any non-metal suggestions, though I have no idea what witch house is (I assume it's some sort of variant of house music?). Electronic in particular would be good for me, but I'm more than happy to add stuff that sounds spacey from any genre of music really, providing I actually get off my ass and do it though.

The Human Equation is, in my opinion, a pretty different album from most of his others and it's by no means space metal, as I told you earlier. I'm not sure about The Theory of Everything being spacey enough. Haven't listened to it pretty much since a few weeks after it came out, but I'd say it's a bit more spacey than THE, judging how it sounds by memory, but certainly not as spacey as all his other albums.

Anyway, it's your list but I still think THE is severely misplaced here. Think about this: if another band, so not Ayreon, had the exact same album, would you put it on this list?

I love puns.
Yeah hmmm... You could describe witch house as the evil twin of dream electro. It takes elements of dark ambient, trip-hop and a wide variety of darker types of electro. I can give you an example, although I don't think this particular one will suit your list. This is representative of the genre. But there are artists in the category that do more "spacey" stuff.

Very snugly indeed. I have Phaedra up there at the moment, but did you have another one in mind?

On a related note you might be interested in spacing out to Cosmic Ground. Released this year and excellent stuff, I have to say, and its kept me interested for a while now. Very close to Berlin school traditions, drawing directly from Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze etc. influences and such. Anyway, it's captivating really.

Have I got an album for you.

Thanks Lit. Grind is a bit outside my comfort zone, but I'll give it a whirl. Btw if you know of more spacey grind, I would appreciate the name dropping because I'm not familiar at all and the original purpose of this list was to collate all things metal and spacey, regardless of my particular tastes. Although I did say it has to be "intriguing" to me... that's kind of a vague ideal though, most music intrigues me in some small way at the very least.
Grind is interesting, but not something I'm "into," so to speak.
