If I ever had to choose a guitar tone to be my all-time favorite, it would definitely be the one Uffe Cederlund and Alex Hellid use on Entombed's 1990 debut album Left Hand Path. If you've never heard this album or just haven't paid enough attention, the tone is similar to a buzzsaw. Pretty brutal, huh? Sure, why not. But it's not just the guitar tone that makes this album so good.

30 years ago today, Entombed taught the world what Boss HM-2 and DS-1 pedals could do to a cheap rig and, by extension, what Sweden could do for death metal. Left Hand Path was not the first death metal album recorded by a Swedish band, nor was it the first recorded by Tomas Skogsberg at the legendary Sunlight Studio, but it was arguably the first Swedish death metal album: with evil-infused hardcore punk riffs, D-beat drums, mid-range harsh vocals, and guitars so distorted they sound like two slabs of concrete being scraped together, Entombed set a trend and heralded the irruption of one of heavy metal's most iconic and influential scenes. Even though they themselves would not stay on the left-hand path for much longer, crossing over into death'n'roll, between this album and Clandestine Entombed are rightfully remembered as death metal legends. Here's to three head-kicking decades of buzzsaw guitars, strangled growls, and dark, crushing Swedeath.

This is definitely one of those albums that is classed as iconic and defining in a genre, that is fully worthy of all the accolades bestowed upon it. The absolute classic title track is at once raw and vicious, but also beautiful in a dark, haunting way. Whilst other songs like the seething buzzsaw onslaughts of "But Life Goes On" and "Supposed To Rot" brought unique sounding riffs to the death metal genre at that time... It's a wonderfully barbed classic for sure!

The sound is really really great... similar to Bloodbath's Ressurection Through Carnage
However, I don't like the growl... what a pity

How do you not like Petrov's growls? They're delectable.

And I think you mean Bloodbath's RTC is similar to this album.

L.G.'s vocals on the debut are otherworldly and evil. Which for death metal, is absolutely perfect! I'd have loved to heard him on "Clandestine", shame he was out of the band at that point...

Indeed he is a fine vocalist, Perfect for the dirty and rough sound of this album and it would be great to hear him on Clandestine. To me LHP and Clandestine are equal in terms of song writing, but this album is better in the Vocal and Production department had Clandestine been similar in those two departments it would be impossible to say which one would be better , This album is really spotless and a legitimate candidate for best DM album ever. You know its true

Indeed, Its a shame Metallica couldnt come up with any original material. Unlike Evile who are thrash pioneers.

Really loved this album when i got it back in the day, probably preferred Clandestine after it came out, but this was one of the first DM albums i ever picked up and it really helped get me in to the genre. Petrov's vocals were awesome and also helped me get over the hump from Metallica/Punk shouted/barked vocals into the growls as well.

This one is Brutal but Technically Great Death Metal Album of all time. You just cant compare it with any other band or album. They are unique in their own way.

Overall, this one gets 8.5/10 according to me.

I've always slightly preffered "Clandestine", in actual fact. The songwriting is first rate all the way through, and I love the creepy atmosphere of the album. LHP is creepy in it's own way too, but the atmosphere on "Clandestine" is more oppressive and gets under my skin more. Though I think it would have been improved had LG sang on it. Both are amazing and classic albums though.

Its strange how this album sounds so fresh despite the legions of bands that have pretty much ripped off everything that is good about it.

Pass, I hardly give tens out. It has to be something really fantastic for it to be a 10. Some filler and sometimes a little too much noise holds this back.

lol the point of Bloodbath is to revive the sound of old death metal bands like this one, including the bands from the U.S., but especially the Swedish death metal sound (which this band most certainly is, seeing as how they're Swedish).

...
You know... I suddenly get why Bloodbath's first album is called "Resurrection Through Carnage".
