I played a lot of them over the years, and in the long run I say PES is better.
FIFA was great from 98 till 2000, then sucked from 2001 onward until the last 2 or 3. Around the same time FIFA went down the first ISS pro evolution came, and nobody here seriously played FIFA for the next 7-8 years, PES was the only football game we played. But PES always some bits that were frustrating as hell ( offsides, weak "refereeing", licensing issues even after ten years), but it had better game mechanics and was more challenging than FIFA,not to mention the editor and modability. The last few FIFAs were a big improvement IMO, but my vote goes for PES.

The players are so fast in PES... To win all you have to do is play with nigeria.

defending and goalkeeping is way better in fifa than pes, not to mention the skill moves system that pes has ripped from fifa

PES pretty much sucks now, but I still prefer it, by far.

I mean, really, with "El Classico" mod, PES pwns pretty much every football game out there. And when me and my friends are bored playing with '90s ManU or '70s Barcelona (after 12 or so hours), we just play PES 6, which is timeless.

FIFA until 2006, PES from PES6 to PES11, concerning 2012 FIFA wins.

And this comes from a guy who plays football games from 1998.

I prefer PES by miles. I think I haven't played FIFA for years, maybe it's gotten better.

We'll buy the new one at te end of this month (PES). I play mostly against my brother and I win most of the time

I've been playing football games since 98 too, I played Fifa from 98 til 08, skipped 09 and 10, then played 11, was mesmerised.
As for PES (or Winning Eleven in Japan), the first I've played was Winning Eleven 3 on the PSone, then I played most PES's on the PS2, then all PES's on PS3. While I truly enjoyed most of the PSone and PS2 releases, I can safely say FIFA is infinitely better than PES nowadays.

I play both. FIFA has taken over in this race the last 3 years. PES seems to be going down hill. FIFA seems more like the sim and PES seems more arcade. Also the team licenses for FIFa give it the edge in my book.

The only soccer simulation I ever liked would be PES 2006, so PES it is. I still play a game or two with some buddies every now and then.

Yeah, they refined some stuff & made it more realistic!

It's pretty good and more difficult to play as usual. Still trying to get the hang of it.

FIFA has always won hands down for football games for me.

But i'm a huge fan of the Football Manager series. I have lost whole weeks to those games over the years.

weeks? hah, I wish I had lost just weeks with it.

talking about Fifa vs Pes, my experience goes from 1998 to 2004 (then I sold both my PS and PS2 and haven't played them anymore apart from occasional tournaments with friends where I still know my shit) and I preferred Fifa for various reasons, including the bigger database and the reality. played both Fifa and PES 2012 though and I've gotta go with PES this time, I'm a fucking beast with the NL

I've had to stop myself playing it, i wont be buying it this year. I used to be addicted, once playing it from 7am till 5am the next day.

You know you've played too much when Patrick Vieira retires from management.

lol, yes exactly, you know you've played too much when all the current players have long since retired from all forms of football, your teams is all game generated players and its the year 2052 in the game. Dude these games are addictive, more so that any FIFA or PES game that been made.

I've forced myself to stop playing it altogether. That game is addictive and messes up your mind! I think it's because of the endless detail... stats, player attributes, who's marking the far post on corners, should he play as a poacher or advanced forward, I need another centre half to cover injuries, need to negotiate a new contract for my star player, need to sort out the training... I get bags under my eyes, I can't sleep properly, I think about it constantly no matter what I'm doing. It's like a dangerous drug and should be banned.

I remember days when i was supposed to be working and I would be thinking about all of those things you mentioned. Don't forget, the endless scouting and management of each individual player. I used to spend so much time working out if I was using this or that player the right way in a game, or if my tactics don't suit that player, or why is so and so not performing, what can i do to help him find his form. Why isn't someone else settling in! I know all too well.

*scout* reckons *so and so* has the potential to be a leading premier division striker... yeah man, it goes on and on.

The thing is you can't just play half an hour or an hour... it's like 3-4 hours minimum. Then like you said, you're thinking about it at work and when you're out. I've had to go cold turkey again. It's the only way. Just stop altogether and forget about it.

Oh I almost forgot, FIFA was crap this year.

Yeah I cant say I like the new defending thing, but it does make games more interesting. Whenever I played with my mates we used to get lot of 1-0, 0-0 etc... now our games in Fifa 12 usually end something like 8-7.

The difficulty modes on FIFA 12 are really unbalanced. If I play on pro against the computer all my games end up with loads of goals but if I play on semi-pro I can win 8-0 or more easily. It's also ridiculously easy to dribble past the whole opposition team on semi-pro.

I'm sick of all the bugs in the FIFA games. In FIFA 11 (after all updates/patches) I won the FA Cup, then when I went to my manager's career stats screen "domestic cups won: 0". It's such a simple thing to get right but EA rushes the games and releases them unfinished.
