One of the most enigmatic bands to come out of the US, ney, the world in recent years. Shrouded in self perpetuated rumours and lies they only recently came out about the facts behind the band.

They used to play a form of ambient black metal but have drastically changed their style toward a kind of fuzzy shoegaze/dreampop (which I also really enjoy) with releases such as 'Dizzy From Eternity' and 'How the Last Day Came, and Stayed, then Faded Into Simulated Rain'. Their finest ambient BM releases include 'Genevieve' and 'Chapelflames (Red Steeples)' (which is the first 6 tracks of the 'Northsuite' compilation).

Anyhoo, one of my absolute fave bands of all time. Feel free to discuss the music, rumours and fibs and apparent ideology etc.[/color]

Heh, I'll be the first to comment on my own thread

Does anyone know anything about the apparent full length follow up to 'Dizzy From Eternity' which I beleive is called 'Sky Like A Pearl, Halfmoon Curl, Starlit Twirl'.

If anyone can verify its existence I'd appreciate any info on how to get it.

Zombie, M.D.

I love Genevieve, its one of my favorite albums ever. I just couldnt really get into their other stuff, Northsuite sounded like a crappy version of Genevieve and the other releases didnt hold my attention much longer than a few listens. Perhaps its due to the hype. I had been waiting for that album to finally be released for so long, just listening to the MP3 of Avalon Polo they had on their old site over and over.

:O Do you mean to say you don't like the song 'Winterglow'? That got me into them big time. I adore the quote:

"When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams - this may be madness. To seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be madness! And maddest of all - to see life as it is and not as it should be!"

I will admit Winterglow is a good track, but the rest of the album wasnt anything memorable. The production is different on it, that pulsing sense of motion isnt as prominent.

I do enjoy the production of both but there's something much more hypnotic about the Northsuite/Chapelflames album, it's probably the repetitiveness of the drums, which I actually do like. The production is less tinny sounding and feels slower and lazier, and is more of a dirge. I'll admit the songs aren't as good as Genevieve and the song 'Northsuite' is a rather pointless excercise in ambience (but then Beta Noir is no better).

Heh, lame sounding, but the music off of Northsuite reminds me of a comedown off of mdma.

I've heard of it. Theres a MySpace with some "tracks" from it. It sounds the same type of music from Dizzy From Eternity, but not any of the tracks off it, I'll try find it.

Genevieve is awesome, one of the most atmospheric albums I had ever heard... I like the whispering like voices, the drowning riffs and everything on it that makes it a very hypnotic album.

It certainly sounds like VC, if it's not it's a damn good clone. It sounds gorgeous either way. I guess their ambient bm days are over. Ah well.

Thank you dude

decent band. it really gets on my tits that some of their releases only exist as mp3 files and, though im not aversedto them making fun of black metal, the fact that they made up a bunch of releases. V. genevieve doesn't exist it seems. i remember someone posting an mp3 of 'P.S Nautical' in acoustic but its actually a cover by procer veneificous.

i really like the dizzy.. demo. it has a weird, delerious psychodelic feel to it.

This is from 'Genevieve'.

I wouldn't say this is one of the best songs but it is still a good track.

Mr. Noise
Just found this on the website:

The music you will hear here has not been produced by conventional means. As of 2000, the band has been using a 'dieselharp': a guitar that works with pressurised diesel gas instead of pickups. The dieselharp is connected via an optical chord to a 40-gallon water tank, wherefrom vibration sensors (a seismic device?) record the outcome. This is what leads to their unique sound, dense with coarse-grained distortion and an 'opiated' production.

I mean, what the fuck is that?

Has anyone access to the lyrics, or any site? Thanks very much.

EDIT: This is from an interview.

Velvet Cacoon's performance at your most recent show was described as having an insane and incredibly intense atmosphere, complete with monolithic sub-bass drones being produced by multiple machines being operated in the background throughout the entire set, a little girl no older than the age of 10, dressed in all black, acting as a torchbearer, and a single massive torch in the center of the stage serving as the only lighting. Self mutilation (from not only the band, but also several members of the audience), blood and fire breathing also took place, and at one point during your nearly two hour long set, you were throwing up/vomiting some sort of putrid purple substance all over yourself and into the crowd while doing your vocals. You had also dashed your arms with Vodka and lit them on fire, causing your arms to smoke from the burning of your skin? Was this show recorded or video taped? Will it ever be officially released or available to the public through video tape traders? What about any of your previous gigs? And supposedly both yourself and the promoter for this show were arrested and taken into custody immediately after the show? Why was this? What happened?

Those guys have some weird hobby's.

As most fans know nowadays all of the hype and storys are all a joke. Apparently they are just a bunch of slacker art students, though they still create amazing music!

I think by creating these lies they showed who the true fans of the music are. I mean one minute Black Metallers were hailing them the best modern BM then when the truth came out people denied liking them and said they were a rip-off of "Hvis..." Burzum, which we all know is not true.

I think what the band did was hilarious. I never really liked much of their Black Metal but I really enjoy their minimalistic works like their new Shoegaze music and the short piano/vocal demo 'How the Last Day Came, and Stayed, then Faded Into Simulated Rain.'
