Formed in 2009 by vocalist/guitarist Patrick Walker (Warning), drummer Christian Leitch (guitarist in The River), and bassist William Spong (who also engineers, mixes and masters the band's work), 40 Watt Sun are a down-tempo doom metal band from the UK.

They're currently signed to Cyclone Empire (Europe) and Metal Blade (United States). Their debut album, The Inside Room, was released earlier in the year to incredibly positive reviews across the web.

That was quite possibly the driest interview I read in a while.

Based on your taste in doom, I can honestly say there's a really good chance you'll like the album in full.

This album has blown my mind this year. It's probably making my top 5 albums of the year.

Pat is the kind of artist that could not go wrong, The Inside Room is my favorite album of 2011 and I cannot wait for the sophomore
everyone should check out the acoustic version of Restless it is equally beautiful

The Inside Room made its away closer to the top of my list of 2011 releases as time went on, but it still wasn't enough to crack the top 25. I guess I started to "feel" the atmosphere a bit more as I started experimenting with non-extreme doom from years past, which I think helped me a lot in terms of absorbing the album. The same thing happened with Ixion too, but not as much as with 40WS.

Bullshit, you just don't want to be the only cool kid on the block who hates this album.
Which is, by the way, the best melodic doom album of 2011. Although I still need to check some stuff out, I doubt anything will top this.

Latest Isole was pretty neat tbh but it doesn't top 40WS, but still check it out if you haven't.

It's a real shame indeed, latest Isole is pretty boss and I would totally vote for them but then comes 40WS and takes the cake.
It's like the poor kid qho used all his money for this big science project or something and does a pretty fucking good job but then comes the rich kid with pretty much a whole ecosystem that the created...

Isole doesn't even make it into my top 10 of doom albums of 2011, even though it is their best since Throne Of Void.
But 40 Watt Sun is by far the best doom album of this year (including stoner/sludge and extreme doom)

The latest Isole fits very well with the rest of their discography but it has a certain quality that makes it stand out, you don't wanna miss it

Just like you feel like this year wasn't that special for black, I think the same for Doom. Nothing really tood out for me this year with just some exceptions.

I feel exactly the same. When I came to do a top 25 list I was expecting to have to choose between lots of great doom but when it came to it there were very few exceptional ones, just lots of decent ones.

Totally. The names I can drop from the top of my hat that really made me go "woa!" would be 40WS, Esoteric, Bong,and... shit, I'm already having a hard time now. That's pretty much it, other albums while being very very good didn't have a wow factor at all (I'm not counting Abruptum despite being in the extreme doom section) which can't be said about the large amount of black we got this year.

Hmm, am I the only one who didn't think it was that great as people make it out to be?
I'm going to listen to it again and see if my view changes I did 3 spins already, maybe 4th time lucky on this one ?

I don't think it's "that" great. It's just very good, very catchy, very emotional, and very well executed. I kinda wish there were more interesting riffs going on; the album is basically carried by the vocal melodies alone. There's some decent churning occasionally, but even then it's on the background and distorted a bit too much for my liking. With more interesting songwriting, it could have been better. It does its narrow and limited thing very well, though, so I can forgive its flaws.

I think I gave it 4/5 on RYM. It can't live up to its predecessor, but taken as a new band 40 Watt Sun outdo almost every other metal act this year. That's still not completely mindblowing, because it was a very meh year for metal.

Some would disagree, especially about one particular subgenre.

I can count with one hand the metal albums that blew me away, and still have fingers to spare. There were plenty of good titles, but very few brilliant ones. But that's subject for another topic.

Surprisingly I actually made a real conscious effort to get into this because... well, I thought it had a lot to offer someone like me. It did move up my list slightly but it still wasn't anywhere near as good as its hype (mainly from people like Marcel) implies.

I should check this out, seems like its good stuff.

I have a feeling you might like it, although the music might take you a while to fully appreciate. I know you like Woods of Ypres, and both fall under the doom genre, but to be honest this sounds almost completely different.

Lemme know what you think though.

That is the bonus track on the vinyl version of The Inside Room. 40 Watt Sun has also played totally acoustic gigs and usually they play one song, either this or Bridges totally acoustic live.
