To each his own I suppose. I personally love longer albums, more material to sink my teeth into. Though I suppose it goes both ways for me. If the material is good then increased length enhances the album for me and if the material is mediocre then increased length makes the album even worse.

Well this album is a double LP so don't view it as a 1 hour long album but see it as 2 30 minute albums!

It is definitely leaning towards progressive territory if you ask me, but not along the lines of Opeth.
As for this album, surely one of the best black records of this year, outgunned only by the mighty Teethed Glory & Injury. So... eloquent.

I seen the tag for this and thought wtf is depressive black metal? Never heard of it. Listening to just the first disc, their is nothing depressing about this. I here a bunch of post and prog and a tint of shoegaze. Maybe the lyrics are depressing but I can't understand a word he is saying. He sure does sound angry sometimes tho.

Yeah, agreed. I put the tag "depressive" on the same pedestal as "viking", "djent" or whatever. Quite a vague term to describe a subgenre.

Is this termed "Depressive" because of the lyrical subjects? Couldn't get anything depressive about this from the initial listens. Got back to it and maybe it is, Idk.

What i could hear is great symphonic post-black with amazing use of acoustic guitars. Maybe how i wanted Alcest to be as I remember finding their 2010 release yawn inducing.

May not be a masterpiece but definitely a very excellent record, if nothing else. Quite possibly one of my favorite from '13.

EDIT: Love the fact that is a double-album and the length gives a more "epic" feel to the whole experience.

Honnestly, I think you can't google translate those lyrics. It will be hard to translate if you're not a French Canadian. I'm from Québec (Yeah... sorry ) and those lyrics are depressive on my opinion.

Amazing album. That reflect our culture, our history. I think only people from Québec can really reach an other level with Gris. That's my personnal case.

I agree. My girlfriend's father is French-Canadian and passed on a lot of information about the Québécois, even raising her to learn both French and English. A big reason she identifies with bands like Gris, Sombres Forêts, and Forteresse is how they present their material. Generally their lyrical content is pretty depressive, but most Québécois black metal bands like these focus on the historical aspects of the province, covering a wide range of rather depressing topics. They also do a great job of incorporating cultural elements into their music.

No, I don't even try to find that kind of site to translate my mother tongue.

Have you try on with the band directly? I asked them a question about a possible release of À L'Âme Enflammée, L'Äme Constellée... in vinyl. They answer me quickly. Probably they won't be too busy on a tour with Iron Maiden Oh yes, they will release a limited edition of À L'Âme Enflammée, L'Äme Constellée... in vinyl pretty soon.

It's about the loss of hope, the loss of their memories, and the loss of what makes them Québecois, which is just as depressive as suicide,if not more so. That's my interpretation anyways.

This is fucking impressive. Anyone looking for intricacies to get lost in, feel free to pick up this record.

Excellent record, the songwriting is really juicy. Too bad it's so damn long, I really can't take the full listen without getting lost in my thoughts a lot.

Not in the purest sense, no. Early Shining, Silencer, early Hypothermia, Lyrinx, and Thy Light are good examples of depressive black metal. Gris tend to be lumped into that scene just because of the atmosphere they create.

Sombre Forets, yes - Les Discrets not so much. Some elements of post-metal appear (mostly in the ambient breaks, textural guitars, and the way they build momentum) but they don't have any affiliation with the shoegaze scene. Totalselfhatred and Nyktalgia are two bands that play a similarly depressive form of atmospheric black metal (although neither one reaches the intricate technicality or ambitious songwriting of Gris).
