Anyone familiar with what some reviewers are calling "War Metal?" It's kind of a chaotic mix of thrash riffs and black metal tremolos/voxs. A lot of the vocals are layered and effected in the studio or the mics are put through a compressor or something, but for the most part I really like the energy and stylings. My favorite part is that everything is 100% balls out all the time. A couple bands that I have listened too and that I really like so far are: Blasphemophagher: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSXlEn4bPL0 Black Witchery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zmou5DILqQ Teitanblood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofsej3rEceQ I realize that these won't be up everyone's alley...you have to really love dirty gutter music like I do to appreciate it, but if you like your music on the EXTREME side check it out!

I would suggest Diocletian and maybe also Temple Nightside plus Adversarial

Really liked Temple Nightside, and Adversarial is pretty good too! Didn't care for Diocletian though to be honest.

@ Marcel: - In what universe is Temple Nightside "war metal" ? - Adversarial are Black-death .. "war" metal is the genre that is linked with goats, leather-spikes&bulletbelts overkill, mostly severely rediculous lyrics & so forth.. Neither of the above translate into that category.. not even by a long shot. ~ I'm generally very unmoved with war/bestial black metal; but there are a very rare few good ones like Wrathprayer, Bestial Raids, Necrovore, Conqueror, Sadistik Execution, etc..

Great thread. Great stuff from Blasphemophagher, Nocturnal Graves and followed by Black Witchery. For a second thought, can't Manowar be classified here?!

@ Marcel: Necrovore, to me, are patrons of the genre .. when it wasn't yet defined by as much rediculousness and juvinile imagery as it is now. Many 'war' metal bands later-on took great influence from them, but Necrovore in itself stayed black-death in there own era and respects, sure.. @ Killjoy: 8)

First and foremost, I believe "War Metal" is a micro-genre. A lot of people could say, "well it is just black metal, or 'bestial black metal' or 'blackened thrash'." IMO Bestial Raids is a prime example of "bestial black metal." That's the problem with sub-genres within sub-genres (enter the term "micro-genre"), they are constantly up for debate as to what makes them what they are and classification can become uber blurry, stupid, and confusing. I suppose it is all in the eye of the beholder....however; this brand of music is so primitive and brutal that it really does diverse it's own classification. I think Solemn is trying to say there is a "first-wave" of "war metal" haha. It isn't purely war metal, but it directly influenced the later bands. I would put Blasphemy and Archgoat in the first wave with the prior mentioned bands if so. I don't care what you classify it as or how many beers it takes to dissect the vox's and the riffs into what genre they belong in, all I know is I like this brutal form of tunes! It's definitely an acquired taste! It's right up my alley though! I just picked up some albums that I had a local record guy order me in, I am loving them! Next I think I will make a "Introduction to War Metal" Top 20 list or something...for people who are interested and want a starting point.

Hammergoat - Regeneration through Depopulation... I've got the album somewhere floating around and I think it can be classified as war-metal. I don't like the album though.

Doing a little more listening and research...then I'll be ready to start my first metal storm list. I think I'll carry my Kvlt Madness theme on this website like I have in my past articles/reviews.

16.03.2012 - 14:32 Written by Guest on 16.03.2012 at 14:29 true, but to me the entire war metal tag is pretty weird to be honest since it''s mostly to do with imagery and lyricism. And not really with the music wghich can be grouped under either black death metal or black/death

16.03.2012 - 15:17 Written by Troy Killjoy on 16.03.2012 at 15:04 But th first wave there was about imagery and lyrics (i.e. Venom, MF, very early Bathory which is musically a Venom clone) And NWOBHM also exists and doesn''t even have to do with music, imagery or lyrics just a time frame. But the war metal one I find a bit further stretched than those two. Like really looking for something to give a new name. Whereas 1st wave bm was shocking at the time due to the lyrics and image which was really totally out there at the time. War metal really isn''t out there and shocking.

16.03.2012 - 15:20 Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 16.03.2012 at 15:17 That I can agree with. I've disregarded war metal as a genre since I first heard it used a couple years back via Moribund. I checked out some war metal bands and most of them are either slightly more "blasphemous" black metal bands, or just straightforward black/death metal bands. Definitely no need for their own separate category in my opinion.

16.03.2012 - 17:37 Written by Troy Killjoy on 16.03.2012 at 15:20 I guess it depends on the "ear of the beholder." I know that I have never heard a thrash, black, or death band like Blasphemopagher...their sound, lyrical content, and imagery (I am falling in love with gas masks) is pretty fresh compared to the status quo...same thing with GoatPenis. A lot of it just blurs the lines with "Bestial Black Metal" or "Blackened Death," but there are also a lot of bands that are making a name for themselves while labeling themselves "War Metal." Just taking the standard music and pushing it that much further. I think it's exciting and something a little more fresh in the extreme metal community. Anyway, I finished my top 20 list as an "introduction into war metal." Anyone who is curious about the genre and wants some base bands to get into it, check it out!
