String instruments such as violins have been around in heavy music since the days of Led Zeppelin. Tracing back the earliest 'symphonic metal' band is a challenge, due to the vagueness of what defines it, but Therion, no doubt, took the genre to new levels, virtually abandoning their death metal roots. Many metal bands before the release of Theli and Vovin - and even hitherto - tend to use orchestras to enhance their music, but, in the case of Therion, symphonic metal truly is a unique genre. Therion's second (or debatably third) actual symphonic metal achievement, Vovin, softens on the metal side and embraces a rather avant-garde approach, exploring and twisting through a world of odd melodies and esoteric themes.

A wonderful album which shows therion's penchant for more than just a bit of classical music-The use of various classical instruments including pianos and violins flows very well with the background guitars (which in turn have their own way of being part of the album's significance), and the vocals are really something out of this world. Its interesting how big a leap they had made from the death metal extravaganza of 'Beyond sanctorum' and 'Lepaca Kliffoth' to 'Theli' and 'Vovin', but in my view they are a better band when embracing other influences.

Best Symphonic Metal album EVER. How the fuck is Epica called the best?, I think TPA and CoO are good albums, the others just overdone and generic chick metal.
Therion deserves the place of the best Symphonic Metal ever. They created the subgenre and they deserves the place

My favourite Therion album. Epic, majestic, dark, mysterious, breath-taking... I could go on.

Anneke van Giersbergen was almost asked to sing on this album but Therion mainman didn't want to "create a polemic". To this day I still wonder what would have been the end result.

I wonder what he means by polemic. It almost sounds like a sneaky way of saying "I want the spotlight just for myself".

It would have been a crappy result had she sung on this album. Her voice just not fit here.

Good but lacking the dark heaviness we heard on Theli, which is a shame as I felt that style suited Therion well.
