Katatonia - Announce Silje Wergeland As Guest Vocalist On New Album

Swedish alternative rockers Katatonia are currently working on a new album and follow-up to 2009's Night Is The New Day. The band has now checked in with the following announcement about a guest vocalist appearing on the album: "Remember we revealed there would be a guest on the new album making a duet with Jonas on one of the songs? We're proud to give you her name now, our friend Silje Wergeland, currently the singer in The Gathering. A beautiful fit in every way!"

Recently, rumours circulated online that the new album would be titled Born From Nothing, which were promptly denied by the band: "It seems someone got their april fools date mixed up a month too late as they claimed 'Born From Nothing' is confirmed to be the new Katatonia album title. We can hereby deny this is not the new album title and none of us ever claimed it to be. What this title actually comes from is simply a web banner for 4 limited shirts we've been doing this spring and that's all there is to that. But... The good news is that the actual confirmed official album title will be revealed at the end of this month, and we advise you to keep checking Katatonia's Facebook page from now on as the title will actually slowly emerge there in puzzle pieces and some of your might make it out before others do."

The new album should be out this September, according to a banner the band posted on their Facebook page.

Guest vocals on a Katatonia record?

Do not want. Concentrate on the music and stop getting superficial outside influences and elements to cover for the fact your last few albums have been your weakest.

In the last album they had Krister Linder in "Departer" and Frank Default was also there lurking in the musical mix.

And the last album was amongst the worst ever done by the band. Case and point.

I would even say their last is their worst. And the one before that was only slightly better.

I would say they're about even, both a massively huge fall from Viva Emptiness.

They are about even but the last one bores me just a tad more. But both are indeed a massive fall from Viva Emptiness. It is like with Viva you are on top of the mountains in the Grand Canyon and with the other two you are at the bottom of the ravines there.

I don't find TGCD to be that bad, but maybe this has to do with the fact that it was my first Katatonia album.

I think they are going to continue in the same vein. So, either they are oblivious to the fact that they are making "weak" albums or they know but just don't care.

Define "necessary"? Last I checked 90%+ of metal bands aren't necessary as they aren't bringing anything new to the table. And as it stands I can't think of any band particularly worthy of taking Katatonia's spot, despite a couple of average albums.

That was definitely more of a personal opinion as opposed to me objectively stating they're an unnecessary band. Obviously they have a massive following and a great many people love the fact they continue to exist, but these guys have been dead to me for... ever since I checked them out? Aside from the BMD era, all of their releases don't do anything for me.

Well they're definitely dead from the waste down post-Viva, but then that's how I feel about Paradise Lost after their debut.

I do. And the few EPs that came out around the same time... all the death doom stuff, basically. As soon as they started getting into the alt-rock style I lost interest.

Oh, sorry... I just misunderstood your comment when you said BMD-era. I usually have the habit of separating Katatonia in three eras because of the three different styles they have done.

Actually, there's a fourth one, when they did only one long song that was like pure goth rock.

I usually frown on bands dragging guest musicians to their albums, but in this case... no, wait, I still think it sucks.

We'll have to wait and see what the result is. It's really weird how every discussion about Katatonia leads to how much their new stuff sucks and how awesome they were until Brave Murder Day.
I for one am still glad they exist whatever is it that they're doing

Fixed. Although I like that album too, but the difference in quality between Viva Emptiness and The Great Cold Distance is still very large.

Agreed. I'm with the group of people who loved TGCD and actually enjoyed NitND a big amount

One of the reasons I liked TGCD so much is because it was my first Katatonia album so it gets some value there, I bet that if I listened to it after listening to everything before it I wouldn't like it that much.

I started with Katatonia chronologically, I used to dislike Viva Emptiness and prefer TGCD to it but as time passed by Viva became more interesting and it was obvious that it was the better album

My Twin is a great song but there's so much filler, and the adoption of that horrible mechanical, sterile pseudo-metal tone/sound was not pleasing to mine ears. They should go back to the more rock-ish sound of Viva.
