This really isn't a metal song, but "Puff the Tiny Dragon" is my favourite song that has something to do with politics. I don't know how many here now that song, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one... I loved that song already when I was a kid, although I didn't understand the lyrics dealt politics. Now that I can read between the lines, it's even more important song for me.

I didn't mean for the thread to be only metal. Could you post the lyrics to the song, and say why it's important to you?

Sure. Puff, the magic dragon Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee, Little jackie paper loved that rascal puff, And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee, Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee. Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail Jackie kept a lookout perched on puffs gigantic tail, Noble kings and princes would bow wheneer they came, Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh! Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee, Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee. A dragon lives forever but not so little boys Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys. One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar. His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain, Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane. Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave, So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh! Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee, Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee. (Peter, Paul and Mary, 1963) The importance comes from the childhood memories. I used to sing and listen to that a lot. Now that I realize I've been "politically active" when I was 5, it feels funny. Just a bit of background to that song: "A dragon lives forever but not so little boys Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys." As we reach that point of growing up, it's at best a sad sweetness when we emerge as adults because we have to leave childish things, dragons, behind. There was a Vietnam weapon nicknamed "Puff the Magic Dragon." It was the AC-47 gunship. "Puff" was the venerable C-47 Dakota airplane converted to hold a whole lot weaponry and used in close air support. "Puff" is also used to refer to the AC-130 gunship but it's nickname was "Spooky" or "Spectre." Since the AC-47 was first used in Vietnam in October 1964 and the AC-130 was first used 1967 they cannot be inspiration for a song written in 1958 and copyrighted in 1963. So, the political meaning of the song must've come afterwards. "Puff, the Magic Dragon" has also been seen as a metaphor of smoking marihuana...

Nice interpretation, there's also an old disney movie they made called Puff the Magic Dragon. I think you'd like it...ALRIGHT I guess I'll post one for now. I like to read the lyrics out loud because you get the true essence of poetic genius. Grand Ol' Party Crash (GOP Uber Alles) I wake up to a caffeine cigarette vaccine then bathe in water I wouldn't drink before gasoline feel like a loser cuz I'm not in Fallujah paintin' a land cruiser with an Iraqi then taking his ruger no M-16 to give me a callus inhuman super malice for GOP Uber Alles baby suicide bombers hurdle suitcases in a nursery I'm in a deli eatin' tuna tasting the mercury Then try to wash it down with a two dollar bottle of water get on the train and think of terrorists with box cutters Gun concealer cuz I see a realer reality and what I breathe through my nasal cavities is killing my batteries Bombs in metropolis out all eye sockets esophagus melted out some Shiite group will get their props for this look I need petrol for my Mercedes but I'm not trying to kneel or bow for Emperor Cheney (NO!) If the opposite of pro is a con then look beyond this, the opposite of congress must be progress What if the second coming's aborted and put in the dirt? It's a harder-nosed hip-hop song so all you metal heads should probably download it. It's off the "Hell's Winter" album. I'll post more shit if this thread picks up.

Check this link: http://www.backingblair.co.uk/london_underground/ A nice video. Not everyone likes it when the London Underground is on a strike. A political song indeed...

@ Little Death OMG...Lakkobiisi (strike song)! Just a bit of background to this song called "London Underground". The drivers of the tube are often in a strike in London, just to get a higher wage. The situation is ridiculous as the underground is such a big part of London that the wages of the drivers are always rised to get them back to work. So, the question is, how long they can go on striking every once in a while to get better paid? Some commuters start to be really pissed off, so that's why this song was made. It's also played in one Finnish radio channel no matter which strike is going on here. But the radio station will be closed forever in a couple of weeks, so no more strike song.

Intesting thread! This one will I comeback to... @Little Death: They certainly don't go around the bush when it comes to their opinion! I don't know how the situation is in London now, but I can Imagine the irritation this situation creates. Okay, time to bring an example of my own. Looks like I'll be the first with a metal song here. The song is entitled "The glitter in the eye" written by the french band Winds of torment. The Glitter In The Eye Silver stars, as a sign of hatred far away? on the chest Silver skies upon the ground at the fall of the day? in my eyes Silver waves are challenging the quietness of the sea? all the way Darkness falling on the mind of those who're gonna die? sands await Mass corpses falling in the water before my feet, be the next No way out enter the true carnage, total mayhem, let the show go on Five senses exacerbated by the smell of death, the sound of chaos Crawling through the amounts of their mutilated flesh, torn apart Silent motion, be a sparkle to you enemies Move yourself like a snake and cross the deadly trench, bullet ride Now I feel the muted sirens of bestiality, in my head I return to my primal predator instinct, the cradle has burnt today? I'm becoming a master of war From now on I have this glitter in the eye Me, myself, and my negation, all mixing up on a battlefield I will always hear the terror in their cries "Born to kill" I call my needle? My riffle is me, I am my riffle ! The virus of fear inside myself, is now born Withstanding the silent face It whispers from under the clay : "It's your fault, forever, liar" Now I know there is no return I'll try to get further The disastrous fury's above In this day, the sun will not rise That's right, cause I've got no other choice By my side, the men on the frontline are already dead, we're paving the way Caught in a web, woven by the heat of warfare, I'm standing strong, out of cover, I'm a void Nothing to lose I suffer no remorse Blood red is the light, I'm burning alive, need to kill! Undergo the infernal bites of my M-sixteen You are nothing to me but a piece of dead meat You only deserve to bend, and to die by my hand Look at my eyes, and behold the string of your fate I've become my only master, as I stand upon the burning ashes I shall never lose the glitter in my eyes Lost my youth and my innocence, for a spangled banner and a silver star One last time I pull the trigger, in my heart (From their demo "The Cells Of The Erased") I like this song not only beacuse it's musically good but also as it points out the terrors of war and how's it's effecting the human mind. If you want to listen to the song then visit this site: http://winds.of.torment.free.fr/site%20windsoftorment/pages/pagemptrois.htm

Well, the Vietnam era had a lot of political songs (and the award for most obvious statement goes to *drumroll* - me!) One of my fave's is CCR's "Fortunate Son" Some folks are born made to wave the flag, ooh, they're red, white and blue. And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief", oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord, It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no, Some folks are born silver spoon in hand, Lord, don't they help themselves? oh. But when the taxman comes to the door, Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale, yes, It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no. It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no. Yeh, some folks inherit star spangled eyes, ooh, they send you down to war, Lord, And when you ask them, how much should we give, oh, they only answer, more, more, more It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one Of the later era, Neil Young's "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" is probably the closest to me.

Queensryche usualy have political messages in their songs. One of my favorites is the song Hostage from Operation Mindcrime II: Culture hostage. I'm writing in the cold grasp of justice, As she turns away. Blind is she supposed to be but, Someone took a razor to her mask. Rusted now the scales you hold, The balance tipped by the weight of gold. When will it end? When will it ever end? The judgment man holds my fate, As I beg forgiveness with the Plastic smile of a candidate. They take for granted that I'm out of my mind And they're wasting their time to care. So all my reasons are damned before they're heard. I'm held hostage by their words. What will lead us to tolerance If we don't question our prejudice? Courage is such a lonely word, Patience, in time these truths will be known. Please, don't keep looking away. You see fortunes are on line, reputations at risk, And there's fear in the hearts of all of you That believe that you're right, And that's your right. But are you... right? The judgment man holds my fate, As I gaze around the room, Their eyes are like knives, could decapitate. They take for granted that I'm out of my mind And I'm wasting their time, don't show, don't show me my fate. Reasons are damned, can't understand. If I fall to pieces they'll know... He's out of his mind and he's wasting our time, we know. As I sense my fate... His reasons be damned, can't understand him. ...and now all my reasons are damned before they're heard. I'm held hostage by their words. I'm a hostage.

This is a translation of the song "La Locomotiva" by the italian folk singer Guccini. It's about a fact happened in 1906, when a anarchist steam engine driver tried to make a kamikaze attack against a first class train. In reality the steam engine driver was not moved by political ideals but by mental insanity. How was his face like, what was his name, still I don't know, His voice when speakin', his voice when singin', I don't know What was his age at that time, what was the colour of his hair But his image can I figure in my mind, All heroes are so young and handsome, All heroes are so young and handsome, All heroes are so young and handsome! Yet I know when all this id did happen, what was his job, The first year of this cent'ry, a steam engine driver, The years when 'twas beginnin' the holy war of the poor, The train too seem'd to be the image of progress Speeding along the whole world, Speeding along the whole world, Speeding along the whole world. And the steam engine it look'd like a bizarre monster That Man did dominated with his hands and his thought, It did cover, with his roar, distances that one said would never end It seem'd he had inside a terrific power, The same power of dynamite, The same power of dynamite, The same power of dynamite. Another great power was just spreading its wings, 'Twas words that said All people are equal And against kings and tyrants it blew up in the streets The proletary bomb, and the air was lit up By the light of Anarchy, By the light of Anarchy, By the light of Anarchy! A train pass'd ev'ry by the station where he work'd, I know it was a long-distance luxury train, He saw respectable people and thought of velvet and gold, He thought of the meagre day of his family and friends, He thought of a train fill'd wi' lords, He thought of a train fill'd wi' lords, He thought of a train fill'd wi' lords. The steam engine it did stand on its track, The pulsating machine seem'd to be a living thing, It seem'd to be a young, a young and unbridled steed Who did bit the rails with his steel muscles, With the blind force of lightning, With the blind force of lightning, With the blind force of lightning. I don't know what it happen'd, why he took that decision, Maybe the century-old rage of nameless generations That cried for vengeance and blinded his heart, He forgot his goodness, became merciless, His bomb was the steam engine, His bomb was the steam engine, His bomb was the steam engine! One day like all others, but maybe still more angry, He thought he could someway make up for some wrong, He got on the sleeping monster trying to drive his fear away An' before he could think of all what he was doing The monster was eating up the plain, The monster was eating up the plain, The monster was eating up the plain. The other rain did run unknowing, almost with no haste, Nobody could imagine he was to run across vengeance, But to the station of Bologna did the news spread in a flash, "This is an emergency, you mustn't waste time, Someone's racing madly off 'gainst a train Someone's racing madly off 'gainst a train, Someone's racing madly off 'gainst a train." But the steam engine is running, running and running, The steam is whistling and seems to be a living thing, And the whistle spreadin' in the air says to peasants bent at work, "My brother, don't fear, I'm runnin' to do my duty, May people's justice walk in triumph, May people's justice walk in triumph, May people's justice walk in triumph! " The steam engine's running faster, faster and faster, It's running, running, running towards death And now nothing can stop the immense force of destruction, He's waiting for the crash and for the winding sheet Of the Great Comforting Lady, Of the Great Comforting Lady, Of the Great Comforting Lady. In history it is written how that run did end, The engine was switched to a dead-end track, With its last animal shout the machine did burst like a volcano It blew up 'gainst the sky, then smoke unwrapp'd its veil They gather'd hime while he was still breathing, They gather'd him while he was still breathing, They gather'd him while he was still breathing. But I like to imagine he' s still runnin' the motor, I like to imagine he's still making the engine fly, May the news come again, again one day to us Of a steam engine that like a living thing Running like a bomb agains injustice, Running like a bomb against injustice, Running like a bomb agains injustice!
