Personally I've found I prefer prog rock over prog metal. I was wondering on the preference of the community here and why they prefer that.
The reason I prefer prog rock is that, it tends to focus on the overall structure of the song. Where as prog metal can turn into instrumental bits casually strung together.

Who's better? Well, I like Prog Rock, but I also like Prog Metal. There's only one way to find out... FIIIIIIGHT!
On a more serious note, I can't really choose since each genre has absolutely amazing bands in them. I think I'll go listen to some Pure Reason Evolution in the mean time while I decide .

Imo prog metal, if well done, is the best genre in the world. When I listen to some Dream Theater, Seventh Wonder, Pain of Salvation or Circus Maximus masterpieces, I'm just totally blown away. I've listened to some prog rock bands - King Crimson ecc... - and I found out that I had to focus a lot on the songs to enjoy them. I think I'm too young to really enjoy prog rock -damn, I'm just 17-, I find prog metal more easy to listen (even if, when I want something RALLY easy, I turn on Power Metal ). I think that in a couple of years I will partially change my mind, but thats my choice at the moment: Prog Metal.
P.S.: sorry for my bad english :/

From Green Day to Metal the road's been hard, but I'm here. And that's what's important.

Progressive rock. I don't enjoy even a single prog. metal band. Progressive rock, in other words...
Kansas and Asia are great.

How do you label them, then?

From what I've heard from them, I'd put them alongside other pop rock/AOR bands. But I haven't listened to more than a few songs, so for all I know they could be a prime example of prog rock.

well, they can be classified as AOR, pop-rock, melodic hard rock; they often get labelled as "progressive rock" because of the reputation of the musicians in the original line up (that has reformed in 2008); the years that featured bassist/vocalist John Payne are more towards meoldic hard rock.

I love both genres with all of my body, mind, and soul. Both are able to take you to different worlds and write wonderful music illustrating these exotic, fantasy lands and mental journeys they sing of (just as long as the prog metal artists don't focus too much on "wanking off" their instruments if you will). Both are able to do so, however prog metal is more likely to "show off" their skills a little more, which kind of loses my interest a bit more than prog rock. In short, I still love both, but maybe prog rock a little more.

I prefer progressive metal although I love King Crimson (all their albums), Yes, Almendra, etc. I don't think it's because I prefer one genre a priori but because the bands I like the most like Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Green Carnation and Porcupine Tree have took the progressive label further (and I´m not talking about the wankery masturbatory prog). I just can't identified fully with the 60's or 70's prog scene fully (although The Wall is one of my all time favourites), so that's why I aprecciate so much King Crimson for changing their style.
