Trying to learn opeths master apprentice, and after the main riff, I just can't discern all the notes to tell which ones are being played, at what tempo etc...it jsut sounds all jarbelled together. Im using the tab to help me through http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/o/opeth/masters_apprentices_tab.htm

this section in particular:

-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------
-2-2--3--2---x--2--2--2--2---------------------------------
-2-2--3--2---x--2--2--2--2----------------7-----5--6--5----
-0-0--1--0---x--0--0--0--0--1--0--1/4--5-----5-----------5-
. . . . . .

Riff 4 both guitars

-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------8-----6\5-----------ph----
-1--0--0-0--3--4--0--4--6--7--7-----5-------5--6--5--3-----
. . . .

Riff 5 both guitars

no matter what, I can't seem to get it to sound even somewhat similer to the song..then I get frustrated and walk away and discouraged and whatnot.

any pointers? DO I just move on to another song.
THis a recurring issue in that songs that sound like they would be somewhat easy/mild challenge become frustrating hair pullers

Play it at half speed, until you can play the notes without even payign attention, then move up slowy towards the original speed. How long have you been playing guitar? It may be beneficial to start off with something a little easier if you aren't too experienced. Try Ac/Dc

This is partly why a lot of people hate on tabs. The rhythmic explanation is nonexistent, if you're reading tabs like you are. And this is why people say you should learn to read music. I would suggest not using tab, except to get an idea of how something is played so you can figure it out yourself.
