For me its probably, "I only like their 2nd or 3rd album". Bands 2nd/3rd albums tend to be the most evolved imo. I don't feel like thinking of any of those albums right now though.

Anthrax - Spreading The Disease
Slayer - Hell Awaits/Reign In Blood

I read other member posts here and I totaly disagree whit all bands in list .... if we talk ONLY about 1th album
Al bands realised good next albums, some realised 4-5 followers, but non of those bands for me realised ONLY 1th what is good ;(
IM ... it would be case if Paul would stay at band .... I like 1th werry much but Nr 2 is big led down, if Paul would stay IM would be one of bands what did sometjing at 80's

Maybe Mayhem, if Deathcrush is only counted as an EP and not their first album. In truth I haven't listened to any of their albums after that in full, just a few songs, but I can remember finding them not to my taste, whereas I love De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

Paradise Lost - Lost Paradise.

Don't like any of their other albums. Same with Anathema actually.

Lost Paradise would also be in my lost just as The Gathering's first one.

I'll add My Dying Bride to the list of doom bands who never touched the same spot again. and yeah... Lost Paradise is PL best album to me too. Anathema goes into the 2nd album category for me.

I believe the following bands had debuts that were better than any albums following. Ignoring the fuck outta 3 album rule.

Paradise Lost - Lost Paradise.

Don't like any of their other albums. Same with Anathema actually.

Saw Paradise Lost on tour with Katatonia/Devin Townsend a couple days ago...and holy shit PL sucked. I felt like I was at a dance concert for goth/emo people. All your typical drum beats/typical songwriting structure/typical vocals/boring riffs...I'm not saying every band needs unique song structure and odd snare accents/polyrmeters (basically what people call prog), but I thought metal was typically a little more interesting.

Even though I've been really getting into death/doom lately and I love Anathema, I will never listen to PL's first album.

I used to not like Traced In Air. Well, I gave it a chance. Its actually a great album, albeit much different than Focus, yet it still sounds like Cynic sort of. Its one of those cases where I couldn't objectively put a number rating on them side by side.

LOL. Sucks to be you then. I would never diss good music just because some dumb reason like disliking the current state of a band. Specially in this case since PL's first album is one of the best death/doom albums Not to mention the fact that the following 4 albums are pretty damn good doom metal as well.

So many wonderful and classic albums around from bands that nowdays are quite shit. Can't see the point on caring about such things.

Pyogenesis- Sweet X-Rated Nothings; since it's their first proper full-length. Man...talk about changing after time...

Undoubtedly better than Burnt Offerings or the Dark Saga. NOTS is really it's only competition but I haven't listened to the s/t enough to drop the hammer quite yet.

During the song "Iced Earth" the pinnacle of music is probably reached. First time I heard it I was like holy shit.

Idk man. I don't see how a band who used to be "good", is now so simplistic and boring. It doesn't make sense. When I saw them live they were unoriginal sounding and complete shit. Take a band like Children of Bodom who has gotten arguably much worse over time....at least Bodom sill has killer solos and content that sounds authentic to the band. After seeing PL live, I have little respect for them. Besides I like my doom more on the death metal/prog/obscure side anyways. PL sound like they would have written some pretty standard sounding doom, which is not worth checking out.

I don't know what's so hard to understand. There are so many examples of bands who have been brilliant but nowdays suck... Yet somehow it doesn't make sense to you? lolz

The bottom line is: I don't care if you don't like them (I don't like modern Paradise Lost AT ALL either!), it's your opinion but it would be smarter if you get your opinion after you listen to the albums, not before! Saying that you won't even listen to their first album based on how they are NOW and ASSUMING they must be bad and "standard" based on just a mere theory wih no basis since you haven't even heard them... That's the funny part Well, it's not actually funny... Just sad since it's a shame when people miss out on things based on mere prejudices and bias without actually listening in order to form a valid opinion. It could have been any other band and I still fail to see any logic in saying "I haven't heard the album but it must be bad because I saw a concert 20 YEARS LATER and they sucked in that concert so..."

So... If someday you think you want to leave the bias for a moment. I suggest you to listen to Paradise Lost's first album. You might like it if you say that you enjoy death/doom. Their sound was definitely unique at the timeand highly influential in terms of riffs and leads which have always been their trademark in their first 5 albums which are doom classics for obvious reasons, just by listening to other bands like Katatonia who own them a shitton of leads and riffs. Feel free to name bands that sounded like Paradise Lost did during their first 5 albums and which existed before PL. There's a reason those albums are classics

No offense, but you're 20 and just said that CoB are somehow, in someway, remaining honest to their sound because of solos: probably the most superficial element of metal. Everything you've said points to a rather poor ability to judge a band's quality and on the correct criteria; on misguided personal bias. Right now you sound like the most naive person on this forum, so start learning about music and its history (by actually listening to it instead of making wild assumptions) then come back and revise your statement

HIM -Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666. But after all, are the latter ones even metal at all... I still think this first one is and pretty good stuff too.

I only like Therion's first album...

Oh yeah. I couldn't think of anything coming into this topic. There are plenty of bands whose first album is their best one, but few whose first album is their only good one. But Swallow the Sun fits the bill pretty good, they took a nose dive.

Elvenking was a good call too. I haven't listened to them in ages, but I remember Heathenreel being pretty wicked. I never hated Wyrd though, like many people seemed to. So maybe I can't quite endorse them.

I like a lot of the stuff from the following bands, but I think their debut is the best.
Anathema (has been mentioned before, but I agree)
Rotting Christ
Vintersorg
Emperor (Also agree with preivous posts)
Moonsorrow
Within temptation (also as mentioned before)
Ulver

Bands where I honestly only liked the first one:
Ensiferum
Entombed
Exodus

Probably there are others I have not thought of just now.
