Looking for some good extreme prog. By extreme prog I mean bands that have progressive tendencies, but still maintain the extreme approach (harsh vocals ect.) Band such as Wintersun, Gojira, Between The Buried And Me. Basically just anything extreme with progressive leanings. Thanks.

Enslaved, Dissona, Ne Obliviscaris, Elysian, The Levitation Hex and Ihsahn are all extreme prog acts that have released quality albums in 2012 that should be worth at least a try if you haven't already.

The most obvious answer in my opinion is Opeth. Try Still Life or Blackwater Park for starters.

Dan Swanö and Disillusion would fit the bill I think. Both progressive, both use harsh vocals.

I know this thread is kinda old, but I'm posting here instead of making a new one! I am looking for some great extreme prog metal bands. Bands I already love is Opeth, Ne Obliviscaris and Between The Buried And Me. Have listened a little to Enslaved as well. Some great suggestions?

Borknagar, Enslaved, and Ihsahn if you dig a more black metal approach. Urd is one of my favorite albums, which I'm still regularly spinning. The interplay between the three vocalists is genius, one of the few bands that can find that perfect balance of epic song structures and melody.

As to my recent finds I recommend progressive/avangarde project We All Die (Laughing). 30 min music-mix of melancholy and furious. DSBM shrieks, bm rasps and gentle tones are very cleverly and consistently composed together here. A really interesting debut:
