Slayer - Jeff Hanneman Passes Away

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed away today aged 49 due to liver failure. Jeff was one of the founding members of the American thrash band, and will certainly be missed by many the world over.

The official statement from the band's Facebook page reads:

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Well that's just completely ruined my day

One of my favorite ever gigs i've attended was rocking out at a Slayer gig where I was front row directly in front of Jeff doing his thing. RIP Jeff.

It's thanks to Slayer that I got into more varied and extreme styles of metal music throughout my journey as a music fan, and Jeff's insane guitar abilities were a big part of that. RIP Jeff, you have made a powerful and everlasting impact on many metal fans/musicians around the world.

Really sad news, for me this is probably the closest hitting of the many recent metal deaths, as Slayer was really the first band that got me into the heavier side of music and helped me open my mind and ears to much of the metal genre.

This is very upsetting. I was lucky enough to have seen Slayer a few times with Jeff and it was always amazing. Very bad start of the day for me...

I'll still enjoy playing the riffs you wrote on guitar. Respect.

Wow. I am somehow shocked. I am not a fan, but I do understand what Angelic Storm was talking about. Those banshee guitar "solos" are indeed special, especially live (only heard on a DVD)... RIP Jeff. I hope he died in peace of mind and soul.

I remember my first ever Slayer gig...I was in the midst of front rows where the war was reigning and I jumped upon the crowd and they're carrying me towards the stage (that dense was the crowd I couldn't fall down). and suddenly I was standing in the pit, just few meters of the band. I remember it was like some bliss. in awe I looked all of them, one at a time and when I stopped on Hanneman he smiled at me and I raised devil horns, smiling back at him. even the guy from security was smiling, he didn't pushed me back, he felt my luck and let me be there in bliss...that fucking wonderful moment now brings tears to my face....such a shock, such a loss....RIP Legend!
