Both kinds of vocals are fine, as long as they are original. A good example would be Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), because her vocals don't sound like anyone else's that I have heard.

You are right about difference of opinion, but I cant agree with you about Friden, cuz he is very good singer and his voice (clear or growl) is excellent. In Flames were not so good before he came in band.
Hehe. I think that Lunar Strain was In Flames' best effort...go figure. But I'm glad that Stanne didn't stay with In Flames...his vocals add so much more to Dark Tranquillity's music. Which reminds me; I should be getting a copy of 'The Gallery' I ordered off HMV for Christmas!

It depends on what type of music one listens to. I listen to Black/Death metal than anything else, so I prefer growls.

I voted clean. I listen to more bands with clean vocals than growl ones. I still like CoB, Mnemic, Dimmu, but I prefer clean.

Clean are usually pretty boring, except spoken and doom.
Usually I said, don't flame me.

depends on how good they are for me, i prefer good clean vocals over good growls any time, but if it's between mediocre - bad clean vocals and mediocre - bad growls i'll rather have the growls

Both are great, but i listen to clean vocals when i get overdosed with growls. So my vote goes to growls.

Agreed. I like the spoken word too. But the growls are great. Especially growling in Doom Metal.
I'm actually a fan of instrumentals but yeah you got to have vocals too sometimes. And I prefer growls and grunts.

Clean vocals... I like growl, scream and everything but I prefer clean vocals. I can listen bands with clean vocals always while I can accept growl and scream only when I am in good mood or totaly fucked..

I cant vote because I couldn't imagine doom or gothic metal with major growls - death and black metal on the contrary cant be imagined without growls. Actually I have started to like more melodic black metal bands that use both, growls and clean vocals. I guess the growling and clean vocals debate greatly depends on the genre.

I like growls because they can cover up otherwise terrible lyrics and still sound cool, and theres always new types of growls to discover.. Most of the clean vocals I like would be more considered rock than metal....and this is the METAL Arena so.....

Growling is aggrsssive..it is cool
Clean vocal is also good...
It depends on the band's style

Growls! All the time.
The more deeper, darker, intense, guttural etc.
The better.
I just can't stand clean vocals.

I picked clean vocals because I listen to clean vocals more than anything. I dont have a problem with growls most of the time but I kinda get picky when it comes to vocals.

I can't really decide on this... I do listen to mostly clean vocals though. Yet when in the mood, growls are what I listen to.

I prefer clean vocals. Growls suck hard balls.
I usually like to listen to nice voices and not some rough shit!
When it comes to more extreme stuff, I usually like quality growls, like Opeth or the death vocals of In Flames or generally anything related to melodic death/gothenburg style. I mean if the music is good, there's a high possibility for me to like the death vocals/growls...

Personally, I can't vote. I love them both the same. For each there are a number of styles that take an amazing amount of Talent. When we take Power vocals, Opperatic Vocals, or just normal Clean Vocals we have Great Vocalists such as Hansi Kursch, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickonson, Ripper owens, Kim Goss, and Tarja of Nightwish (personally I don't like her but she is talented as hell). Then for growls I figure we Have Corpse Grinder, Sabina Classen, Angela Gossow, Brian Fair (early) Phil Lobante (Early) Lord Worm, Chris Barnes, and Chuck Schuldiner.
Why even Vote?

hm very hard choice, i like growling, such as Jari or petri, but i also like clean stuff, and i prefer it when they acompany each other such as the band Battlelore *they have a women singing clean vocals and a man growling, it works very well i recomend the song 'Swords song' or 'storm of blades'
I can't vote, but i must, i shall go for clean.

i guess it depends on your mood, i like them both but rather a little bit clean vocals ´cause you can perceive a bigger spectrum in the differences of the voice
