I just saw the thread "The dark side of death metal" and I have to ask, what black metal bands are there that offer the dark atmosphere that the death metal bands in that other thread have?

Averse Sefira have a lot of death metal influence. I'd also recommend Haemoth just because of how brutal they are. And also French.

Does black metal have a "light side" then? :/

I think Lifelover is about as close as it gets. Sort of.

At the risk of opening a whole torrent of counter-reactions, neither of those are black metal, imo.. it's shoegaze/hipster metal..

Karlabos
Meat and Potatos
^ (which is shortened for "shoegaze black metal", so still black metal)

By the way there's a lot of light/uplifting stuff among the bm scene, even when not blackgaze:
Dekadent
Caladan Brood et al
Spite Extreme Wing

Not to mention tongue-in-cheek/not completely serious bands like
Tjolgtjar
Lugubrum
The Meads
etc... which clearly are more upbeat than the typical black metal stereotype.

The thread though is directed to bands which bear an uneasy (heavier than usual) atmosphere more than anything
If you check the links above you will see they sound darker than your average Marduk or Ildjarn.

Why you mention Caladan Brood?

Why not?
In my view CB, Summoning and alikes are the lightest among bm
