There's been a lot of blackened death craziness being served up lately in our beloved metal genre. Within the past two years especially, it seems like the style has been seeing a return to form of sorts, with the likes of Bølzer, Teitanblood, Diocletian and others dishing out albums that are pleasantly old school, yet with a delicious modern twist. Of all these bands, however, it is probably Belgium's Emptiness who stand as the most immersing and emotive of them all. Their 2014 album encapsulates this idea perhaps better than ever before, and is nothing short of excellent.

Why doesn't this appear in the top 20 of 2014? I thought the required number of votes was 20. Is it 50 now?

Also, once it gets to the top 20, the rating will drop sharply as butthurt AtG and Insomnium fans hit it.

Soooo, I don't think there is a great rush to make the band visible (all it needs is a biography which, imo, is stupid)

Oh no I'm not the kind to want this or that band to make it to the top. I laugh at the people who manipulate votes to make a change in the annual top20. I just looked at the rating and wondered if the rules had changed.
Also, I remember reading something about the bio not being mandatory anymore. But I might be wrong again. Maybe an activation request for this has already been sent.

It says that the logo is not mandatory but the bio is. At least, that's what this says

Quote:

A coded bio is not necessary for a band to be activated, although it is a nice aesthetic bonus.

Found what I was thinking of, one of DT's posts. I'm sorry, this just meant that the code wasn't necessary. My memory just failed me and I thought the whole thing was no longer required.

I'm more than convinced that is the album of the year, It's almost subversive in its ability to persuade people of its brilliance. I'm also drunk so maybe make up your own mind.

Alright, after whats seems like thousands of listens (but are actually only 3) I'm finally convinced that this is not garbage. In fact, it might be brilliant.

Kind of sounds like The Meads of Asphodel playing black metal.

Barely on the fourth track and I've already had more *impressed* moments than with most albums this year.

EDIT: And it keeps getting better on subsequent listens.

The most player record of 2014 for me. Very happy to see it on top chart of MS (and with a high position there).

Well, this is strange. I've gone from not liking this at all to thinking it's decent to thinking it's actually a really great album. Funny how that works with some albums after quite a few spins. A real grower of an album if there ever was one.

Might be one of the most unique-sounding albums of 2014.

I must have this album. It's like Consolamentum's fury meets Monotheist's depression and bile.

Having spun this around 8 times now and I like it more than ever before. It has grown so much on me it's now definitely top 5 material of 2014 (beating out Doom:VS at the moment ).

All songs are awesome, but All Is Known has to be the best song on the album.

Agree with the above post that All Is Known is easily the strongest track, really epic piece.

As far as the rest of it goes, it's probably something I'd have to listen to more to be won over in the way most people seem to have been, and it's not quite compelling enough for me to do that listening right now, so I'll probably be reassessing this in a couple years, but I will say it's a really impressive exercise in menace and atmosphere which shows remarkable restraint when it comes to extremity and allows the suggestion of impeding danger and violence to drive things for the most part, with Tale of a Burning Man deviating from rather than exhibitng the norm for the album. Even if I'm not quite ready to lose my shit over the album, I like it a lot and can certainly see why everyone else is so in love with it.
