Machine Head have had quite a revival in terms of public perception since their nu metal experimentation. The Blackening, with its extended blasts of intense yet melodic and hooky modern thrash, was one of the best received metal releases of the last decade, and a personally significant album. Rather than attempting to outdo the 'epic' nature of that release, they followed it up with Unto The Locust, toning down both the song and album length and making more melodic and arguably accessible songs, without sacrificing their core sound or writing capabilities. The question is, where does the band go next?

"Progressive Thrash Metal"

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Haha, that's what I thought as well. Just because there's several songs over 7 minutes doesn't mean it's progressive.

The vocals are awful

Well your favourite genre is death metal so I'm not surprised the vocals aren't quite your cup of tea

His vocals in The Blackening were way better. Except for Now We Die the vocals are not good.

I think it's fair to say it's highly unlikely they'll exceed The Blackening, but this is a very respectable release.

They already exceeded The Blackening with their vastly superior debut Burn My Eyes.

Machine Head are progressive thrash now, and have been since 2003? I didn't realise making songs that were too long to justify the content counts as progressive.

That's always been the definition of progressive. Just ask the punks in the 70s about it.

If the second half were as good as the first half then this album would be much better. Too much weird shit going on in the latter half (Imaginal Cells is just odd), and Game Over sounds like a Slipknot song
But with songs like Killers & Kings and Night of Long Knives, it still manages to be a good album. Definitely not in my top 10 of the year though...

I find Imaginal Cells to be a cool medley and Game Over doesnt sound like Slipknot at all, it sounds like Punk Rock on steroids, something like Offspring but with some metal on it, and although I absolutely hate punk rock, I really like Game Over.

Also Beneath the Silt sounds like a Down tribute song. This album is better than Unto the Locus but in spite of being a long album it gets old fast

I'll get straight to the point in saying that I prefer "Unto the Locust" to this album. Main reason being, some songs on this album seem to try way too hard in trying to stay relevant and "true" to MH's original core style, whereas "Unto the Locust" in my opinion was a lot more diverse and experimental-and that's basically how I like my Machine Head.

Nonetheless, "Bloodstones & Diamonds" is still a really solid, above average album, and especially considering I wasn't too fond of 'Now we Die' and 'Night of the long Knives' (still not actually). I think these sort of songs showed Machine Head at their most aggressive, but not necessarily best-again, it made me think they were trying too hard. That said, my personal highlights are definitely 'Sail into the Black', 'Beneath the Silt' and 'Damage Inside', as for me they were each hardcore evidence of how MH can write a brilliant song.

If you're talking about comparing this new disc with "Unto The Locust', it might be stepdown. But, then I haven't clearly listen to an album(just had an overview but not in state of mind to judge it). By the way, Unto The Locust was a terrible record to come out; people whined about progressive, change in sound, brought innovative elements, different style, altered lyrics concept blah blah. None of them has make into 2011 release. Excessive of stretching out songs with no right plot to songs has made Locust tiring, boring and unoriginal. I don't think Bloodstones will sound that terrible but as I said, I don't have check out this album yet but I need to give new disc a go soon.
