Full disclosure: At The Gates is one of my favourite bands. And when I say that, I don't mean in my top 50. They are in the running for #1. It's been almost 20 years since the release of Slaughter Of The Soul, an album considered by many (myself included) to be one of the finest melodic death metal recordings ever. At last, they are back with a new album - At War With Reality.

Fanboys already popping in. I listened to the album, and while I do admit that ATM is not my favorite melodeath band (I'd trade them anytime for DT's The Gallery, Damage Done or Fiction), this album is solid, but far from being a perfect 10, even by ATM standards, not to mention melodeath standards. The production is way too clean, the song-writing is way too safe, the performance is satisfying but flat and it focuses more on atmosphere. They still have some aces up their sleeves, they can definitely put out a decent album of above average material, but that's it. Nothing mindblowing. An 8 or 8.2 at best. Surely not a disappointment, but seeing that people label it already as album of the year is pathethic. This cannot top SotS, which is not album of the year material either... not to mention topping Insomnium's latest, but better melodeath quality there, even though their newest effort is not on par with their previous material either.

Epic waste of money, maybe.

I bought my last type about 12 years ago. I even remember that it was Nightwish "Century Child"
And now when I saw that tape I thought - that is epic but definitely waste of money

I picked up my copy of the album last night (yes, a real copy - the local independent music shop out here puts new releases out early) and I share the opinion of most of the others here - it kills! It's great to know that At The Gates are back in full-force.

I like the end of the album. I need to give it more listens to fully judge on it though. But the last 5 tracks are AWESOME!

It's really good for me... I must be one of those people with lucky enough to not expect the new album to be something super revolutionary and yet enjoy one hundred per cent because of its quality. I don't understand people who probably think that because it's a "brand" band, nineteen years later they have to reinvent the wheel. In my opinion nobody in a similar case has exploited their sound to a way-out form and ATG are not an exception, but well maybe is because I don't need to believe in miracles to enjoy a good album :

It's this year's Carcass I think. The recent Carcass album was slightly better though.

I prefer At War With Reality over Carcass' recent release, however they're both really underwhelming

I am slightly surprised at the amount of AotY comments on this one. I thought people would find it generally a bit lacklustre. Apparently not though.

That the album was extremly hyped and that some people consider it being the best metal comeback album of all time (at least what i have read on the comments of several metalsites). What im saying is that i am going to listen through it some more times before i make a proper judgement.

after the third listen on my wireless headphones around the house it was all coming together,i had book of sands and head of hydra ,then the rest, which means no bad song on the album=top 3 of the year and in the top 10 of the century for me.

This album is a nice reminder of how good a band At the Gates used to be. Sadly, it's not nearly as good as their back catalogue. Still, a decent, albeit a tad uninspired listen. I'd rate it with a 6.8.

I think it's important to take a step back and evaluate this album to best you can as an independent entity. I wasn't really around in the scene when At the Gates were really storming it and I've recieved a lot of heckling over the years for saying they're overrated but I feel that's a relative term. A group can be overrated but still good. I've just never seen them as the gods that some people portray them as.

Speaking as someone that was removed from the "legendary At the Gates are releasing their first album in forever' crowd I can say that this was a pretty solid album and I'm glad they seem to have retained their sound even so many years removed from their last effort. It's awesome hearing that sound with modern production tools. "At War With Reality" is a very solid album. Good enough to put it up there for consideration as one of the best melo-death albums this year even though I personally think 'Shadows of the Dying Sun' outperforms it.

Just make sure you take a step back and evaluate how good this is on it's own (which it is) and not just "because its At the Gates."

Rating pending for after I give it a few more spins.
