Another superb album from the brilliant Steven Wilson. Nothing short of what I expected. Strong contender for early AOTY. Favorite tracks: all of them.

Only listened to this once so far, and it was kinda weird. Not sure how I felt about it. I think I may end up liking this one a lot, but for now, it seems like I'm not going to like this one as much as The Raven or even Insurgentes. Might take some time to digest, though, so we'll see.

IMO, his best solo release, and probably one of the best albums he's put out in any of his projects! This man never disappoints.

LOL

it's a great album, listened to it just a couple of times but will get more listens.
This one will satisfy even Porcupine Tree listeners, no retro-prog on this one, it's diffetrent from Grace and Raven. Steven does not disappoint.

Are you implying that power metal is the only genre with power? This album is devoid of any excitement. It's boring, and I didn't give it 1 because Steven is obviously a talented musician. If I were to rate the album on how listenable it is over time, then I would score it 1 because the album is lifeless, dull, and uninspired.

It's rated highly because of the fanboy effect, but by the end of 2015 the rating will probably stabilise at 7.

I doubt it will get as low as a 7

do you even like PT or Steven's other solo albums? if you don't like the guy, your comment is rather pointless. For instance I don't like a lot of extreme metal, but I don't feel the need to go and bash or complain that I don't like it.

You say this album is uninspired? Well, I find it exciting, creative, expressive and even original.

In the end, it's all relative, a masterpiece for me could be a piece of crap for someone else. Boy, did I see red when I read your comment.

The funny thing about this post: Steven is actually the weakest musician in the whole band...by a mile. Also, i get that you like do dislike. It's a common thing, I call it the "Blackwater Park Syndrome", people will always find a way to disagree on something that is being praised by some vast crowd. It happened to some of the likes of Abigail, Rust in Peace, Kill'Em All, Blackwater Park, Symbolic and not just in Metal, we can go way back in Music history and Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Crimson, Rush, Who, KISS, etc... suffered from this as well.

With this being said I'm not saying you need to like because it's getting praised, your opinion it's just that, your opinion, as valid as mine or anyone else's here. You claim this is rated highly because of fanboyism towards Steven Wilson, but I think it's safe to assume that your disliking is as much based on that as that "fanboy effect" you speak of or perhaps your aproach towards the Prog Genre itself.

I'm not a black metal guy but I'm not going through Mayhem's album topics calling it "untalented noise".

Cheers

This album pretty much seals the deal for me; Wilson's not my cup of tea. Most of the tracks remind me of a soundtrack to some hollywood romantic comedy film, and the ones that don't are not giving me any great vibes either. I love prog but just not the kind Wilson makes.

On my second listen now (been busy with other albums recently... more in a metal mood and less in a prog-rock mood the last few weeks, haha), and I'm actually liking it a lot more than the first time. Looks like it's going to be like all his other albums, and will probably take a decent amount of listens before I can really decide how I feel about it.

If someone told me that this was a Porcupine Tree record, I'd be inclined to believe them. I was a bit hesitant with the news that it would be less prog-jazzy but my concerns were quickly assuaged. Very emotional and varied but never do the different styles present in the album seem out of place. Plus the 5.1 mix is awesome as always!

Excellent album. Rewarded by repeated listens. Only really started enjoying it after half a dozen play throughs and from then on started enjoying it more and more. Have listened to it 20 times now and loving it. I'll park it for now but it's definitely an album I plan to dig up from time to time over the years to enjoy again. It's a grower and a keeper. Bravo Steven Wilson.
