Top Ten Most Metal Non-Metal Songs

Thumbs up: +2
I tried to steer clear of pretty much anything that uses distortion, and really rock in general. For instance, Zombie by the The Cranberries is pretty metal in its own way, but not pop enough for this list. I did make an exception for Say Anything as they swing a bit further in the pop direction despite the distortion. No rap either, or this would be a very different monster (Bone Thugs, Gravediggaz, Wu-Tang, etc.). These are the songs that for one reason or another give off a dark, metal vibe without actually going there. Comments should be interesting.

The first two really inspired the list to begin with. Knock me if you want to, but I listen to all kinds of music and think most genres have merit. I get as amped to Halloween and Broken Crown as I do to some Slayer songs. Fiona is just across the sword's edge from Flyleaf imo. Not that Flyleaf is super metal, and I honestly think Fiona is angrier. Pornography fits right in with the industrial metal of Godflesh et al. Daddy and Pieces of You are basically acoustic Korn songs. Tegan and Sara lean on heavily goth-metal lyrics and ambience with Dark Come Soon. Little Girls sounds like a typical pop-punk tune musically, but the lyrics follow the mindset of a serial killer. Give those lyrics to Corpsegrinder and you have yourself a death metal song. Portishead gets a little doomy on this track. Speaking of which, My Dying Bride actually covered this song. Bleeding Love is a slice of more corny, goth/glam metal. Marilyn Manson could have easily sung this one. Finally, Katy Perry...the synths in this song would easily slide into a Dimmu Borgir track. The vibe is dark.

Interesting list. I'm a big fan of Fiona Apple's earlier work, myself, so I know what you're trying to get at.

She just oozes the bitterness generally reserved for the black metal crowd. Also, she is just a talented musician.

Portishead - Roads... uuffffmy favourite non-metal song and WHAT A SONG.....

Very intelligent and funny the name of your post. There are indeed many songs from other styles that in some way thrill us as if they were metal (like The Cure that you mentioned as well... Their album "Wish"... taking aside both "happy" songs all of them could be metal just if they were harder or angrier)

Glad to see others think about this stuff too. Roads is amazing. Funny thing is the first time I heard that song was the My Dying Bride cover, not the original. Both are good. I think the cover is even more stripped down.

Yeah I really like the idea behind this. I just wish it were more than a top ten, it's not as if we had hundreds of lists like this one, and you needed to make it shorter. It might be very interesting if you expand it, these are "just" songs.

"After Hours" by The Velvet Underground. A jaunty little ballad about offing yourself.
