Well in my point of view - saying about some anthem it is "crap" means you are saying the country is "crap" meaning the people of the country are "crap"...and be sure i will hit anybody who would tell this about my anthem (= my country = my nation = me) eyeball to eyeball

Dude, do you have ANY idea how many people dislike the national anthem of their own country? Similar to wanting a change in the country's flag (for which we had a TV poll here last week), I think the last NZ anthem survey I heard came out with at least 40% wanting something different. It's just a song, chosen by whoever is in control. What if the Taliban or al-Qaeda took total control of their areas, chose a new national anthem that musically totally sucked ass (let's say both objectively and according to your personal taste, for sake of argument) and forced it on the good people who just happened to live there? Would you still not hate that shitty anthem? It's just a song.

If Taliban took control over my country it will be intruder and many Czechs will fight it to victory or death like our resistance and warriors abroad in WWII...but in case you dont know, we are currently really independent country...finally...and our anthem is a symbol of this independence...i understand lands like Netherlands who are independent since 16th century or so can already forgot it (or have developed other way of thinking about it through centuries)

but i will tell you something...i meant (and this is true, this i am not creating it now to be "out of suspicion") there is no need and no reason for legal acts about words - calling police, having court sessions, sending people into jail etc...

but if someone says you face to face "you suck" or "your mother is bitch", you will often hit him, dont tell me you (or everyone here on MS) wont...people sometimes fight themselves in pubs or so...but it is "right here" and "right now" and nothing afterwards (if someone wont be making an affair from it)

this is the difference...i have just read czech "law about using the state symbols" and there is nothing about misusing or insulting national anthem, so it is "legal" to say "anthem is crap"...but it would piss people like me off and this should obviously have consequences...

In my post before this, I was not talking specifically about your country. I'm arguing that the national anthem of a country should not be [thought to be] entirely, directly related to its people (as you expressed on the previous page), and thus there is nothing wrong with having an opinion that an anthem is a crappy song.

...Unless... if you are arguing this idea because 100% of your country voted and agreed to adopt your Czech anthem. Then I would understand your position. But as I said earlier, far from 100% of NZ "chose" our anthem, but because of democracy we who don't like it just have to stick with it and accept it, and I expect this to be the situation in most places...

Sorry, but hitting someone for CALLING you names is absurd imo. Hitting someone cause they attacked you with physical violence is alright. But just cause someone says you're gay or whatever and then hitting them is jut loss of self-restraint

Well i have to tell one thing - in fact i have never really "hit" anyone yet, except for my brother a few times, when he really pissed me off, like the day during Taekwon-do training, when he ripped apart my suit during some arguing ...and even then i havent injured him except for some bruises maybe...

Ha Ha Ha, bring it on yanky boy! But seriously, i think that it is not so much the anthem itself but the way it is sung. They even took the piss about how drawn out it is on The Simpsons.

i like it when sung as it's intended. a guy who writes a football column for either ESPN or Sports Illustrated (forget if Doctor Z or Easterbrook) once wrote about how drawn out it is becoming as sporting events. it's supposed to last like 45-50 seconds. it's supposed to be vigorous and upbeat... and it routinely gets slowed down, drawn out to almost double it's intended length.

the local club hockey team has a version song by a old tyme country western singer who once was an honorary captain of the team that is the nation anthem equivalent of Funeral Doom. the closest approximation i can make is Type O Negative's live cover of "Paranoid" where they take a 2 minute song and play it so slowly it stretches into a 10 minute epic... you don't even recognize it until you hear some of the lyrics and it slowly dawns on you, "wait? what? this is 'Paranoid'?"

the other team starts the evening taking the ice to "Girls, Girls, Girls" by Motley Crue... then the local team skates on to "Born in the USA" by Springsteen... Cheesy, but upbeat and gets the (pre-drunk) crowd going.

then they launch into the glacial medley of "America the Beautiful" into the national anthem and it's like opening the airlock on a spacecraft in orbit... just sucks away all the energy out of the barn.

thank god the beer gets the crowd back into it.

Unfortunately my national anthem Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, that's Welsh by the way, I can't speak a word of as I only speak English to my shame. The words are very uplifting though about defending the country with your blood.

our anthem is simply about our country, about the landscape and its beauty...so this should be another point, why i am refusing the idea such a song should be called "crap" so much and you are not, since you really find your anthem dull, due to lyrics
