Amorphis is one of the sure values coming out of Finland. Everybody knows (or should know) their early history as a melodic death band. 1994's Tales From The Thousand Lakes remains to this day a classic album. These musicians have been together over 10 years with their current lineup. Emblematic singer Tomi Joutsen was the last piece of the puzzle that led them to a trailblazing second career that started in 2005 with the release of Eclipse. Let's fast forward to 2015. Under The Red Cloud, with that eye-catching psychedelic artwork, is their 12th studio release expected September 4th through Nuclear Blast.

I always do this when it comes to a release from one of my favourite bands. For the first couple of plays I try to remain detached to avoid disappointment. Having given this a few more spins I've really come to love this album. Impeccable melodic taste, brilliant groove, and Tomi Joutsen shines here like never before.

Tell me about it, I keep expecting the wheels to come off the Joutsen Amorphis train - surely there's only so many times they can play around with this sound before they trip up? But it doesn't happen - TBOT was a slight drop from the previous 3, but still full of great songs, Circle was a beast, and this is even more so. Gonna need more months to be able to put it in perspective but this is a genuine contender with Eclipse, SW and Circle for my favourite Joutsen album. Tree of Ages, The Four Wise Ones, Dark Path, White Night, title track, The Skull, even Sacrifice and the bonus track Come The Spring, just some scintillating stuff here, and no real weaker songs like Hopeless Days or Three Words, the only one that slightly underwhelms is Enemy At The Gates and perhaps the chorus of Bad Blood. I'll be shocked if this isn't my personal AOTY, which is a definite achievement in a year in which personal favourites like Sylosis, BTBAM, Riverside, Enslaved, Maiden, FNM, Weedpecker and more all dropped new material

Not a single dead weight track, this album is truly great! In fact, I think it's best album I've heard in a while from any band.

My god, this album is suck a great achievment for modern Amorphis. Perhaps the one of the big bands that I was expecting the least and yet the better suprise.

Beautiful songs, great composition, instrumental, the folk element was on point and of course GREAT vocals

It's a breath of fresh air to see a modern album reach the Top 200 albums of all time, let alone get over an 8.5 score in the Top 20. At the time of writing this comment, this album has a higher score than their 1994 Tales From The Thousand Lakes. Kudos to Amorphis as it's fully deserved.

Under the Red Cloud is by far my favorite album of 2015, and my personal pick for Album of the Year. Not a single wasted track, and last night when I was listening to it for the thousandth (an exaggeration) time last night, I noticed things I hadn't even noticed before, like the drumming in "Tree of Ages". And "The Four Wise Ones" and "Dark Path"... love those tracks. Probably my favorites off the album. Dang, at this rate, I'll just go all out and say they all are.

To see it in the Top 200 on this site is amazing, and it deserves it.

Also, Tales from the Thousand Lakes is the release that got me into Amorphis.

While I like Elegy, The Pasi era releases have fallen to the bottom of my CD rotation.

When they picked up Tomi Joutsen, that was, in hindsight, a great choice.

Agree about the 1 ratings, 6 already and 5 against the new paradise lost. Needs to be a way to deal with this!

It causes this site to lose a lot of credibility, which is kind of funny considering ratings are supposed to be subjective. You have to REALLY hammer an album you don't like for it to get to the point where we can't take you seriously, and that's how a lot of people vote.

The one that really stood out to me last year we Ne Obliviscaris. It seemed like enough people were annoyed by the hype train for that band that they decided to all downvote that album with 1s, as if a bunch of people loving a record you don't like is the end of the world. Look, Taylor Swift will sell more records than Carcass ever will. That doesn't make me like Taylor Swift more or Carcass less. I could give a fuck if most of the world prefers Taylor. People have different tastes. Who fucking cares?!

So stop voting 1 on an album just because you think everyone else doesn't have as good of taste in music as you do. Embrace and celebrate your own unique tastes! I know I do.

A good album for Amorphis fans... still boring to me... limited and repetitious vocal melodies and structures ruin the interesting keyboards and guitar melodies to me... not a melodic death metal fan... wish they were more creative with vocal melodies... whatever... still a + album...
