I was considering to open this thread in the Metal Arena, but I think that this is not a battle at all, instead, I opened this to see which genre do you consider the hardest to get into, based on your own experience and on what you have heard/read from other people.

I know that many people seem to take a lot to get into progressive metal, for example, and I don't know why, but I supposed it's because this whole experimentation with complex structures and stuff. In the other hand, and based on the number of fans of each band, I can see that doom metal is one of the most "unpopular" (¿?) or the hardest genre to get into for most of the people here in Metal Storm (especially funeral doom).

The genre that has taken me the most to get into is death metal, basically the pure death, technical death and brutal death. I don't know why this happens to me as I don't dislike grunts, and I would say that the only death metal form I appreciate is melo-death (including gothenburg) or death metal fusions with other genres like death/doom or death/prog.

So, what do you think it is the most difficult genre to get in?

I can't think of any genre was difficult for me, but there is some genres which i don't like, not because "it was hard to get into it", but am just not into it, like power, glam, symphonic, you name it, but the most difficult band for me, to get into it, was Cryptopsy, especially their album Once was Not.

3 months..........

you know raw BM .... what asle you know about BM have you ever listened BM at all

Some Emperor from their first album. It doesn't sound like music at all. It sounds like every band member is in his own world. The only thing that made sense was the symphonic sound.

Empereor never have played RAW BM

But they belong to that wave of Norwegian bands.

I've never really gotten into black metal like other genres. Some of it's okay, but I just never really get that surge of awesomeness provided my thrash metal, power metal, old school heavy metal, etc. Some death metal too, but I like much more of that than black metal.

I actually never got into old school heavy metal,trash,prog/doom,power,symphonic stuff..also death and grindcore stuff is somehow repulsive to me...but i really like black and melodic death metal.I agree with anyone who wrote that is most difficult genre to get into is black metal.

Cryptopsy's really hard to get into. Especially, with those crazy vocals.

I'd probably say grindcore or black metal.

With friends unfamiliar with metal you can at least say listen to the riffs on thrash, heavy, or death metal, but it seems impossible with black metal to pinpoint them something to lock on to. I'm not too familiar with black metal myself, but thanks to listening to extreme power metal I can handle the vocals.

First metal concert I ever went to featured Misery Index and Pig Destroyer, of which I had known nothing about except for listening to the clean parts of PD lyrics where they talk random weird crazy shit about melting eyeballs and raping dead women who had been raped by dead men who had been raped by undead sea cows. I had been listening to metalcore for a time before that (metalcore is actually good for exposing you to the harsh vocal styles like melodeath, death, and black) so I felt prepared. That shit seemed merely to make offensive noise than actually articulate anything, which is why I haven't even tried listening to any grind in the last four years.

I also remember that! Awful as hel. I played in my first band around '92, we played death/grind and suddenly these "black metal"
bands started playing the same fests we did. We like WTF???? I couldn't stand them, their fans AND their music. I refused to listen to black metal for a couple of years, but later I turned around. You've gotta admit: if it's good, it's good.

Progressive metal.

First, because it's not commercial at all. Second, because the musicians do what the fuck they want thinking on their own taste without trying to fit any pattern.

BM is the first think coming to mind, but then again...wasn't too "hard" for me to get into. Just kinda grew into it, well more like called into it.

For me, Tech metal and some Powermetal is hard to listen to.

That's true, you really have to start to appreciate the musicians' talent before you can really get into genres that focus on instrumental techniques like progressive rock and metal.

I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with you Dudes here. I've always listened to bands with prog influences, but when I first checked into prog bands myself, I had "wtf" written all over my face.

Nowadays, that's a part of my ugh, ugh, thing... man. Camel, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, etc..

DSBM, for sure. Due to obvious reasons, many metalheads that I've met tend to find it either too boring, or depressive..

I would say Funeral Doom, The way Funeral Doom is makes it inaccessible... long and crushing, I think it takes a lot of focus to stay with the songs and not just zone out.

I think drone or noise is a lot more challenging than funeral doom. Funeral doom can be incredibly melodic and beautiful, almost in an accessible sense. Stuff like Merzbow and Skullflower (don't worry JOOE, I'm not slagging them) aren't exactly what many would call accessible by any stretch of the imagination.

More or less, ya. I mean depressive black metal is in essence the correct name of the genre, but the depressive aspect more or less refers to the burdensome/sorrowful atmosphere, whereas "suicidal" is specifically referring to the lyrical content.

imo it's like calling Amon Amarth viking metal. It's a melodic death metal band but lyrically they focus on stories of vikings.
