Hello.
I just got a gift certificate for some music and I want to buy some black metal records on vinyl.
I already have some Darkthrone, Burzum and a little Mayhem. I'm looking for essential black from Norway, you know, like "True Norwegian Black", but its not necessary limited to Norway. Since people can always argue whats the most essential records of black, I was hoping for a little help for records you absolutely need to own.

I have a few I think is records you NEED to own:
Mayhem - Deathcrush
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Burzum - Burzum/Aske

These are the owns I have so far as I think is essential. I have a few Gorgoroth, but I'm not sure how essential they are, compared to others at the time.

Deathcrush for me is not an essential, it doesn't even worth my time.

Esential can be bands what don't belong, worship and sing about St. Ann , as old Ulver, Arcturus, Immortal, Enslaved, Emperor, read a DerRoz review aout Ulvers opener... how he descrives nature and midnight sun, such bands, such albums wil be essential

Should we say that the only essential albums are from 'The Inner Circle' and a few bands more (Immortal, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir)? Could bands like Summoning and Agalloch have some essential albums? And another band that could be included here is Cradle of filth, with the albums Dusk and her embrace and Cruelty and the beast, in my opinion, despiting the fact that they're from UK and many people doesn't consider them as a black metal band.

I'd guess that Agalloch and Summoning are essential to some point. I don't know which of their albums though. And sure, those Cradle records are some absolutely amazing stuff, but I don't know if they're that essential to the black metal scene. Maybe, maybe not.

Reading a comment like this one just proves what I said in my first post on this thread: there is no such thing as "essential records".
What is "essential" for some can be crap for others. What we consider as "essential" depends on our tastes and perception.

Even though some people would argue that "Deatcrush" is an "essential" BM record, other people, like you (or me, in this case), don't like it at all. For us, it is surely not "essential".

Perhaps "influential" would be a better term to use than "essential". Though the influence of a band or album can be matter to debate too to a lesser extent.
For example, some bands influenced other artists much later (even after the band has been disbanded for years in some cases) but were not famous at all or highly regarded in their time. The link can be more tricky to establish than it looks at first.

Perhaps "influential" would be a better term to use than "essential."

But the two terms are often used synonymously, and I think that most people are aware of that. So I don't really have much of a problem with it. If I had a friend say "recommend some essential sludge albums" to me, I would understand that as "recommend me some sludge albums that were massively influential in the genre's development." And it's really not all that subjective, actually, because regardless of whether one likes a particular album or not, if it was greatly influential upon bands and albums that came after it, then that's it, end of story. It's not debatable.

You can still get essential albums that weren't influential, and you can get influential albums that aren't essential (or are shit). "Essential" is generally a poor choice of word anyway as it doesn't mean much without some kind of context. I think in this thread it's fairly obvious what is meant though. I would have probably said "landmark" albums or something.

Hooray for lists! Subjectivist plebs who defy them are just threatened by the prospect of educating themselves and admitting their private experience isn't the centre of the universe. There's never a reason not to know the classics, whether in literature, film or music.

You probably have everything you need in this topic already, and then some. J.O.O.E.'s list is probably the most balanced and complete, though in fairness I would include Summoning's Stronghold there. And if you like the Nordic 2nd-waveish bands of the turn of the millenium, I guess Taake, Windir etc. mentioned above, but who cares.

I don't see what that has to do with the topic, though. Whether you intend to 'tube them or buy them, you still need to know what they are. If the OP is asking what they are, his listening/buying habits have no relevance to our answers (and besides, aren't our business).

For me, building a library is about surrounding yourself in the treasures of (in my European case) Western civilisation and human culture in general. It is about having key pieces at an arm's reach if ever I need them for reference. It's not like I've actually read more than bits of Chaucer's, Shakespeare's or Wilde's complete works, but if I didn't have the editions handy my library would feel pretty inadequate. The same can be said of canonical records, although the canon is of course much more fractured and contested due to the number of specialist genres. For the genres I really like (and for classical; that's easy), collecting the "essentials" whenever I come across great deals is a reward in itself and puts my personal, idiosyncratic favorites into context.

I am the kind of person who will buy a classic album by an artist I don't really know or am not especially enthusiatic about just because it's a classic, if I find a good (usually second-hand) deal. I don't like them all, and I may pass them on later if I'm really not going to ever listen to them again, but exposing yourself to new things and learning to like something you didn't think would be your thing is part of the fun.

Collection-building is serious business!

Did this actually turn into a serious moral sermon on the evils of materialism? Guy asks for recommendations of essential albums and you tell him he shouldn't buy albums because it's materialistic? I can't tell if you're being facetious, but I think that's a very miserable and banal viewpoint. Life is a "short lasting high of materialism", if you want to put it that way, and I can't think of many better ways to beautify it than to surround yourself with what's greater in life than your own subjectivity. (Besides, can anyone deny the euphoria of organising your library once again, switching from alphabetical to genre, nationality or chronology-based order for a change, or back? It's heaven.)

I am suspicious of people with empty homes; it speaks of empty lives. This of course is only half-serious and no doubt an unfair prejudice, but I would be miserable without my thousands of books and hundreds of CDs.

I don't think collecting and collection-building are the same thing, though. Neither me nor, as far as I can tell, the OP is a collector by temperament. You know, the kind of person who hunts after rarities and must have a complete set of first printing records from every drone band from Oregon, or whatever. I just think it's a good idea to own good stuff if it comes my way.

I'm not telling anyone not to buy albums or that materialsm is evil, i collect myself. I myself would never be satisfied with just songs on my laptop, but you will never be satisfied with just the albums you got anyway, thats materalism for ya, just a short high that you get over once you have recived the album ejaculated over it and then put in the pile with the rest and then told everybody about on the net. If thats taken too seriously then you might need to get out a bit or you will turn into a metal version of comic book guy, and then whos life looks empty?

I was only half serious with what i said anyway.

Chill out guys.
As IronAngel said, some records are classics and is a must in a metalheads collection. I'm just looking for some classics. Again, by essential I mean "classic records you really need to own". I listen to Deathcrush only once, because its a classic, but I like Mayhems later records way more.
My general collection is far greater than I wrote in the first post but still I feel like I miss some "essential" records in my black collection (even though my black metal is the the majority in the collection).

I'm not new to metal as some of you might indirectly suggest, just expanding my collection and some of you expanded my horizon, and thanks for that.

My wife and I are going through all our albums alphabetically to make sure we've both heard every one of them at least once. Once that's done, I guess we'll sell/give away all the stuff we really don't want to listen to again (already put away a bunch of melodic metal from my teenage years) and start over. It's a great way both to keep the collection up-to-date and manageable, and rediscover forgotten favorites. That said, we only have like 600-700 albums so it's not like there's any huge surprises to discover.

@No one: I figure by my tone it is evident that I, too, was half-joking and half-preaching. I don't think a "brief material high" is an accurate way to describe the experience, though. At least for me, it's not that you take great pleasure in a single purchase and then forget it. Much of the pleasure comes from the collection as a whole, the knowledge that you do have a respectable selection of, say, traditional doom or 19th century English poetry or whatever. Everything is at an arm's reach shoud I ever need it, and I don't need to get a whole lot of use out of a single item for it to be worth it. Just looking at your books or CDs can be inspiring and produce actual happiness (which has been confirmed by research).

I guess the serious (but not too serious) point I was making is that we shouldn't diss materialism. It's not original or controversial, it's just banal. We are matter, and happiness is probably achievable through recognition of that fact. We like stuff, and that's OK!

You know what posers do ? gather essential records ....

There's nothing wrong with a disciplined exposure to a genre for the purposes of expanding your boundaries, but as for purchasing on vinyl I would say that is a poser thing to do. There is no reason to own vinyl unless you are already familiar with the albums, like on MP3, and just want the authentic version of a favorite.

If someone says, "Hey, Burzum is great!" and I want to check them out I will put them in Spotify or something and give it a go.

I would buy vinyl of obscure stuff like Jazz or world music, though, because chances are it may not be available in other formats. A lot of music has been forgotten by time, but this is not true of the given list: Burzum, Emperor, etc., all easily listenable on whatever streaming service you like, if the purpose is to try them out.
